My name is Scott Thompson and I live at 5421 Overland Drive in the City of Huntington Beach. I am
writing this letter to ask the Planning department to support my proposed deck extension project
I have obtained written permission to build the deck extension through the Femhill Association Board
Members and now I seek a variance by the City of Huntington Beach. More than 54 percent of the
town houses in my tract have decks extended to the corresponding retaining walls and I would like to
have the same right to extend my deck as everyone else. I have submitted photos and site plans for
this proposed extension.
In addition, I met with Eric Haghani in the Building department and he told me that as far as the building
codes are concerned, I am not in violation and that he could stand behind giving me a permit once I
have submitted more details regarding the deck railing and posts saddle joints. After speaking with the
code department in much detail, I now realize that I should have obtained a building permit prior to
constructing the extension. Please note that I spent over $5,000 to extend this deck, most of the
money went into building a strong deck that would meet all the Building Codes.
