Dear Board Members:
As a concerned and proud resident of Huntington Beach for over
twenty-five years. I have offered to volunteer my time to assist
Radio Shack in obtaining this sign permit. I am very closely in-
volved in this situation, for my son is the manager of the Radio
Shack store located at 8941 Adams Ave, Huntington Beach (intersection
of Adams and Magnolia.) In fact, I was associated with the Oka Bros,
and built our track (#4992) Ballerina homes, in the early sixties,
next to John Eager school.
Our city was hit by a tremendous wind storm, causing wide spread
wind damage.
My son as manager, had arrived early to preform some of his
duties, etc, prior to store hours. Upon arriving he observed the
sign with missing panels and debris in the parking lot. Due to the
early hour, he contacted me for help. Having been in the construction
field for over forty years, both as General Contractor and Registered
Div. II inspector, I went to the store to be of assistance. Upon
arriving, I also observed plastic sign lettering debris in the park-
ing lot and missing panels in the sign.
The wind was still gusting very strongly and I made the decision
to remove the balance of the panels, for the sign is of a hollow
box design and the missing panels were allowing pockets of preosure
to build up inside the sign, Therefore, in the interest of safety,
we removed the balance of the panels, (breaking some during the
hurried process) and cleaned up the debris in the parking lot.
Later the District office of Radio Shack was notified of the wind
damage.
As in all municipaties, businesses, etc, certain procedures must
be followed. This information was forwarded to Tandy Corp. (Radio
Shack owners) in Fort Worth, Texas. After processing, they in turn

notified a local sign company for repairs.
However, after a reasonable time lapse, the local District office
and my son were wondering why the sign was not being repaired.
Once again, my son contacted me to see if I could find some answers.
Therefore, I visited your department and while at the counter, I
received very courteous attention and information, and quite by
accident, the young lady who was very helpful to me, recalled the
situation, for she had received a telephone call from some sign
company approximately 30 days prior to my visit. The sign company
was advised as to the procedure necessary for any repairs. Probably
due to the fact all sign companies were up to their ears in repairs,
the ball was dropped here.
I, received all the necessary documents from your office, and am
doing my best to follow up.
The sign is of a very sturdy steel construction, needing only
lettering replacement and paint touch up.
During this "down time" for the sign, sales have dropped off
quite a bit and is causing employee turn over for their pay checks
are affected.
As a concerned citizen of this city, I feel we must do all we
can to keep retail stores in Huntington Beach. Our surrotnding
communities are building large malls and are enticing our local
merchants to move. Any assistance we can give our merchants is
certainly an advantage for tax purposes, etc. These smaller
centers are in my opinion, assisting in relieving traffic con-
ditions by keeping purchases in our "home town", in our local
neighborhood areas.
I am in sincere hopes that the board will grant a conditional
sign permit for the repair of the sign.
