Written Narrative for the Kumon Center of Huntington Harbour for Neighborhood
Notification.
A. Let me first begin by stating that there are over 1,300 Kumon Centers throughout the
United States and Canada. Kumon is a supplemental educational program in which our
clients, children between the ages of 3 and 18, work on math and reading worksheets,
which are copy written, to assist their study in these areas. The setting of a Kumon
Center is not a traditional classroom and, in fact, there is no "teacher". Instead, our
clients visit the Center once or twice a week for approximately 20 minutes per subject.
During this time, they complete a few worksheets and take the remaining worksheets to
complete on their own time at home. The assignments are designed in such a way that
our client's can learn independently, Kumon is a self learning program.
The business conducted at the site is very typical of an office function with a retail-type
component in which a service is provided to our clients for a fee. The majority of the
time that a Kumon Center is in operation is for general business purposes. In other words
Kumon staff are preparing for consultations with the clients, lining up worksheets for
distribution, general office management and fielding inquiries from the community.
The square footage of the proposed space is approximately 1100 square feet and will be
divided between classroom, storage, bathroom, and reception.
We are open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2pm to 6pm, and on Mondays and Thursdays
from 3pm to 5pm. Currently there are 3 employees.
B. This application is being initiated in order to move the Kumon Center. The center has
been located at 4952 Warner Ave., #231 for 16 years. We are proposing a move to 4972
Warner Ave., #104.
C. The proposed space is located in a strip mall on the corner of Warner Ave. and Bolsa
Chica. Current businesses include a mobile home sales company and a day spa.
D. Kumon serves children between the ages of 3 and 18 who are looking for both
remediation and enrichment in the areas of math and reading.
