Re: AL & ED'S AUTOSOUND, 16732 Beach Blvd.
To whom it may concern:
The intent of this application is to gain a Limited Sign Permit
in order to reface an existing pylon sign and to install two
sets of channel letters to the building facia facing Beach Blvd.
and Terry Drive.
On a corner lot, code allows either freestanding or wall signage.
The freestanding sign is existing under previous sign code. The
current code allows 1.5 sq. ft. of signage per lineal foot of
building frontage as calculated on one elevation. The building
is 64'6" facing Terry Drive which caculates to a total of 96.75
sq. ft. of wall signage allowed. The two proposed wall signs
total 90 sq. ft.
The existing pylon sign is designed to accomodate two sets of
tenant faces as the building has two tenant spaces. At the time
of this application the faces are Cycle World and Busybody Fitness
Products. The Busybody face will remain and we propose refaci--
the Cycle World face to read "Al & Ed's Autosound".
Accoiding to code the sign face can say the company title only
and this conforms to code. However, no change can be made to
the pylon without voiding the "grandfather clause", therefore
refacing it would mean the entire sign must be removed. This
would have a negative impact on the site and on Busybody Fitness
the existing tenant.
The combination of wall and freestanding sign benefits the public
in two ways: The pylon sign serves as identification from the
street showing what businesses are in the center. The wall signs
direct customers to the businesses door once ir- the center. The
signage is not overly large or obtrusive.
Other centers not on a corner are allowed both pylons and wall
signs and we feel it is overly restrictive to deny this center
the informational benefits produced by visible signage. Al &
Ed's Autosound serves the public with car alarms, car pnones
and other accesories that more and more people want and need.
The people of Huntington Beach have a right to know they are
there by both wall and freestanding signs.
The fact that Al & Ed's Autosound is a growing business in this
time of recession is proof of the public demand for the products
and services Al & Ed's offers.
