while only a small percentage of residential construction_ is currently regulated, tx
fire coders and/or specifications are very important to the coa®ercial building market.. 1
The top rating given to CORIAN 3011d surface products is, therefore, most significant.
In light of this ever-tncrersing emphasis on fiee performance, the puof CO of this
bulletins is to sur, arstrize the test method used to measure the Elammiibility of CORIAN, to
report resulti abWftmd, and to compare the data with selected other building materials.

The 'Steiner Tunnel' test was used for measuring flammability of CORZAl1 sheet. This
test fa known as AS'iM E84, Standard Test Method for SURFACE BURNING CAARACTERISTICS 0!
AUILDnia HATERIALS. This test procedure is similar to Underwriters' Laboratories (UL)
No. V23, National Fire Protection Association (VFPA) 255, hysi`no. 2.5, and UBC 42-1.
In this test, the speaiaan is inserted into a 25-foot-long furnace. The specim*A
(20" wide and 24' long) in plaead into the top of the tunnel and sealed with a mineral
( slab roof. A gas burner is applied at one end and a blower and aRtack at the other and
to create a controlled draft.
Distance ofthe fl:.ae spread In measured an the burned surface of the material i
during n teh-minute test. Smoke generation is measured by a photoneterinq system
installed in the exhaust stack.
The material is scored by coml+aring results to inorganic reinforced cement beard
rated at zero and red oak flooring rated at 100. For example, a material having a flame
spread of 150 represents a material whose rate of flammability is 1.5 times that of red
oak. smok-t generation scores are arrived at In a comparable fashion.
NOTE; The test standard and teat results described above are intended to
show the relative performance of CORIAN to various; materials when
sub,,ected to the prescribed test conditions. Under actual fire
conditiois, performance may vary significantly from that which
might otherwise be inferred from the teat results.
