City Hall, August 6th, 1929.
In the absence of Mayor Bowen, the Council was called. to
order at 8 o ' clock P M by the Clerk. On motion by Butcher,
Conrad Mayor seconded by Mitchell , put and carried, Councilman Conrad was
appointed Mayor and Chairman of the Council protem.
Councilmen present: Mitchell , Butcher , Conrad.
Councilmen absent : Bowen, Harris.
Mitchell on Mayor Conrad appointed. Councilman Mitchell to assist
finance com. Councilman Butcher on the finance committee.
Minutes The Clerk read the minutes of July 2nd and 16th, and on `
motion by Butcher seconded. by Mitchell same were approved as read.
Mayor Conrad invited those having matters to bring before
Slot machines the Council to do so at this time. Mr G F McKelvey addressed. the
Council relative to the recent reinstallation of slot machines in
business houses. Mr McKelvey asked the Council why this had been
permitted and if it was the intention of the Council to ignore the
action. Mayor Conrad informed those present that the matter was
being referred to the City Attorney for an opinion at next meeting
of the Council.
Mr C W Hanke informed. the Council that Mr Elmer Lee was
making an effort to induce employed men and their families to live
Lee ' s in Huntington Beach and that in as much as the Chamber of Commerce
rehabilitation had assisted by paying Mr Lee' s expenses for two weeks the City
campaign. should cooperate in a like manner. Mr Lee addressed the Council
and stated that during the past week he had made a careful survey
of the city' s vacant houses and apartments and expressed the
opinion that if the owners could be induced. to clean up their
places he could be of service in renting them. On motion by
Mitchell seconded by Butcher the Council pledged an amount not to
exceed $80.00 .to be paid to the Chamber of Commerce on demand to
promote advertising.
Ord.. 320 and The Clerk gave Ordinance. No 320, regulating oil derrick
321 removals and Ordinance No. 321 fixing salaries of city employees
their first reading. r
Res. 612 ✓ Resolution No. 612 authorizing the payment of salaries to
salaries fire department employees was read, and on motion by Butcher
seconded by Mitchell , resolution No. 612 was passed. and. adopted
by the following vote:

This being the time set by the Council for opening and ex-
Motorcycle bids amining bids for. furnishing the City Police Department with two
Henderson Motorcycles, the Clerk opened. and read bid. of E D Maltby
who proposed to furnish two new Henderson Motorcycles fully
equipped for the sum of $585.00 plus the used machine now in uses
by the City. There being but one proposal or bid., on motion by
Butcher seconded by Mitchell , same was ref'ected.
Controller to On motion by Mitchell seconded by Butcher , put and carried, the
purchase motor- Controller was authorised to purchase two new Henderson Motorcycles
cycle fully equipped at the cost of 0585.00 plus the used Motorcycles
o,* ed by the City.
The Clerk read a resolution signed by the Huntington Beach
Dhamber of Commerce recommending that the City purchase new life
Life Boat saving equipment consisting of 1 small. life boat , six small and
one large life buoys , a first aid kit and two whe6l cart for
launching boat. Judge C P Patton explained. to the Council that the
boat now in use was too large fbr-one life guard to handle and
urged compliance with the request. On motion by .Mitchell seconded
by Butcher the City Controller was directed to purchase the
necessary equipment, subject to the approval of life guard Belshe.

The Clerk read a letter from fire- chief Sargent- in which it was
Charge for fire recommended that a charge be made for use of the fire equipment out-
calls autsid.e side the City limits. Motion by Butcher "that in the event the fire
> city. department responded to a call outside the city limits a charge be
made" was seconded by Mitchell , put and carried.
Delegates to Fire Chief Sargent asked permission to send two delegated to the
Firemen' s Firemen' s State Convention at Redlands August 29th ,30th,31st and Sept.
convention 1st, and on motion by Butcher , seconded by' Mitchell authority was given
and the cityauthorized to pay traveling expenses.
The Clerk .read monthly reports of the City Clerk , Treasurer , Engineer,
Monthly reports Police Judge and. Chief of Police , and on motion by Butcher , seconded. by

Mitchell , same were accepted and ordered filed.
A J Parker . The application of A J Parker for appointment on the police force
policewas referred to the Chief of Police.
Three firemen On motion by Mitchell seconded by Butcher the appointment of Fire
approved. Chief Sargent of lienry Weiga.rdt , L E Hill and Geo 16 Clarke as firemen
was confirmed.-
The surety bonds .of W C hill Elect Co. , Acme Electric Co. and
Bonds A D Moodie Housemover, were .on motion by Mitchell seconded by Butcher
accepted and ordered filed.
Bond C D On motion by Butcher seconded by Mitchell -the personal bond of
Steward a.eceptedChas D Steward, Chief of Police was accepted and ordered filed.
On motion by Mitchell seconded by Butcher demands numbered 151 to
Demands 265 inclusive were approved .and ordered paid.
Adjourned On motion by Mitchell seconded by Butcher the Council adjourned
until 7:30 PM, Monday August 20th, 1928.
