HomeMy WebLinkAbout1928-08-20 388 M I N U T E S City Hall, Aug. 20th, 1928. Pursuant to adjounment of August 6th, the Council met and was called to order at 7:30 o'clock PM by Mayor Bowen. Councilmen present: Bowen,Butcher, Conrad, Mitchell , Harris. Elmer Lee The Clerk read a letter from the Chamber of Commerce recommending campaign that Elmer Lee be employed an .additional two weeks beginning Monday . .- . August .27th, as publicity agent and asked the support of the City in paying Mr Lee' s salary. On motion by Conrad seconded by Butcher the Council pledged the amount of $50.00 for one week' s salary provided the Chamber of Commerce would support with an. equal amount. Ord 321 The Clerk gave Ordinancb No. 321 fixing the salaries of certain Salaries City officials its second and last reading, and on motion by Conrad seconded by Butcher, Ordinance No. 3a1 was passed and adopted by the r following vote: Ayes Councilmen : Butcher, Conrad, Mitchell , Harris, Bowen; Noes Councilmen : None Surety Bond On motion by Conrad seconded by Harris the surety bond of C R Furr, C R Furr City Clerk was approved and ordered placed in the custody of the Mayor. Engineer Rosson reported that in the matter of repairs to the out- Outfall sewer fall sewer plant, he was waiting a reply and further instructions from the State Board of Health. Steam noise Engineer Rosson informed the Council that the noise nuisance B1. 111 caused by escaping steam in and near Block 111 had. been abated, by the installation of mufflers. Superintendent of Streets Rosson made a written requisition to the St Supt Regn. Council to purdhase the following equipment-:--- .----------- for equipt. 1-Caterpjllar` 30, :ar.a��td ,V'weigflt 9,100 lbs , cost $2,775.00 1-Russell standard No 2 grader 3 ,850 lbs, " 769.00 1-Scarifier attachment - 650 lbs , " 155.00 1-Killefer nine foot point scarifier940 lbs .00 Total $3,9900 This referred to the street committee for report. The Clerk read a letter from the City Engineer requesting ftre Hydrant hydrants near intersection of Geneva and California, which was re- request ferred to the fire Chief. Appl to cut The application of E G Tout to cut Main street curb was referred curb Main St. to the Street Committee. The Clerk read a letter from Jas S Farquhar of the Huntington Beach News in which the City was asked to continue its advertising campaign. H B News On motion by Mitchell seconded by Butcher the request was granted for Advertising a period of twelve weeks and consisting of six full pages commencing with issue of August 24th and including Sept 7th, Sept 21 , Uct 5th, Oct 19th, and Nov 5th. This was referred to the Music & Promotion Committee. Demands On motion by Conrad seconded by Harris , demands numbered 266 to 277 were approved and. ordered paid. Motorists fail- Councilman Contad called attention of the Council to the need of an ure to heed ordinance making it a misdemeanor for any motorist to refuse to stop signals from on signal from police officers. Referred to the City Attorney for an officers opinion. The matter of allowing closed tents on the beach sands was dis- Tents on beach cussed by the Council and the conclusion reached, was, that no ordinance front could be adopted to govern, for the reason that the beach front was private property. Harbor Eng Engineer Rosson informed. the Council that the City of Los Angeles , k ineers to in- harbor engineers would meet triTth the Council to inspect the municipal spect pier pier immediately after noon, Saturday August 25th. 389 Ord. 320 demolish Mayor Bowen announced to those . present in the audience that a y_ oil derricks. joint meeting between the Council , City Attorney and oil operators would be held in the eoupcil chamber at 7;30 PM the 21st to discuss Ordinance No. 320 regulation removal of oil derricks.
