The Clerk read the minutes for the month of duly, and on motion Minutes by Conrad seconded by -Butchdr same were anproved. This being the date set by the Council for receiving and opening bids for furnishing the City street Dept with a grader and Bids on scarifier, the Clerk opened and. tend the following bids: grader GEORGE IV FRENCH, Los Angeles , Calif: Ventura scarifier complete---------------------------------- 400.00 SHEPHERD-CROOK Inc , Los Angeles , One 30 hp Caterpiller tractor complete---------------------- 2650.00 One 11 point Killifer grade scarifier----------------------- 290.00 and allow $75.00 for. the used. Fordson tractor now in use by the City. MAY -7BEMIS Co. of Santa Ana, Calif. 1 30 h p Cletrac Tracklayer Tractor----------------------- 2540.00 and. allow $100 for used Fordson. CONCRETE,MACHINFRY and SUPPLY CO. Los Angeles , 1 30 h p Bates type Tractor-------------------------------- 2825.00 and. allow $235. 00 for used Fordson Tractor After a short recess for the purpose of analyzing bids the following motion was put by Conrad., seconded by Harris , put and carried: "That all bids be rejected except that of Shepherd-Crook Itic and that their bid be accepted at their price of V650 J00 for Caterpillar and $290. 00 for scarifier. " Amer Legion The written request of the American Legion for $3000 to request for defray expense of Armistice Day celebration was referred to the Armistice Day Music and Promotion Committee. Funds The Clerk read a report from Engineer Rosson stating that the Impr. of estimated cost of complying with the State Road Dept request to Hampshire straighten Hampshire Ave would be 85766.80. By consent of the Council Avenue. Mr Rosson was directed to write the State Division of Highways ( in ans..,er to their letter of July llth) to the effect that this City is indisposed. to stand the cost from its General Funds. Tables for The City clerk was given permission to call on the Street beach front kept. for labor and material in furnishing seats on the beach front n on August llth at cost not to excedd �100. on motion by Harris seconded by Conrad. The Clerk read a letter from the Chamber of Commerce asking that a band be furnished for Sunday afternoon concerts during the Band remainder of the Summer season, also Labor Day. With the consent of the Council the matter was referred to the Music and, Promotion Committee with power to act for Sunday August llth. Evans letter of The request of officer W L Evans for letter of recommendation recommendation was granted. and the Clerk directed to draft the letter. The Clerk read a, petition signed by a number of citizens asking that Mr H L Faust be granted a license to operate slot machines also Slot machines an a.pplica,tion signed by Mr Faust offering the City a license of $700 per year for a maximum of 35 machines. The matter was referred A to the City Attorney for his opinion. Mr Chas Wallach presented a, letter which was read by the Clerk , offering to stage a three day carnival provided the City advance Carnival the sum of $7,100. 00 to help defray expenses. This was referred to the Music & Promotion Committee. A letter from the State Railroad Commission requesting that R R Crossing crossing near the east city limits be put in good. passable condition East City limitswas referred to the City Engineer for his report. 448 License On motion by Mitchell seconded by Butcher the following application for license were approved; Mrs Emma "eichart, Cafe 310 Walnut: Harry Bakre , Cafe , 306 Ocean, Geo 17 Barnett, Lunch, 201 Yain, R M Marshall , Service Station 1st and Ocean. Moving Picture On motion by Harris seconded by Mitchell the application of house Mrs W A Osgood to overate moving picture show at 207 Main St was approved provided application bear the approval of Police, Building and Fire Departments. Re-Collection of The matter of starting suit to collect taxes a.nd. license Ahlburg Gaso Taxes due the City by Ahlburg Gasoline Co and Oil Co was referred to the City Attorney for report at next meeting August 12th. The request of Ray Fullmer and Walter Washburn to have Trees eucalyptus trees removed from in front of 606 and 610 - 12th Street was referred. to the City St Superintendent for his re- commendation. The City Attorney was asked to examine automobile insurance Insurance policies in the Clerk ' s office and advise if the city is properly protected. Budget On motion by Conrad seconded by Butcher the Budget prepared by the Controller was adopted. Demands On motion by Conrad seconded by Yitchell demands 1578 to 1703 were approved. and ordered paid. uVestminister Attorney Blodget was asked to look into the matter of telephone Exc telephone company application for telephone exchange at I.Vest- minister. The City Clerk was directed to secure the advise of the Chamber of Commerce on this ma"Iter also. Bonds On motion by Conrad seconded by Mitchell the bonds of R E McIntosh and John R Humphrey were accepted.
