City Hall, Monday May 16th, 1932-
Pursuant to adjournment of May 9th the City Council met and was
called to order at 10:00 AM by Mayor Conrad.
Councilmen present: Marion, Huston, Stevens, King, Conrad.
Councilmen absent None.
Petition The Clerk presented and read a petition signed by approximately
803 citizens and property owners petitioning the Council to take the
necessary steps to acquire the tideland for oil dril1tftg`and such•-..
other purposes as the Council may see fit. Resolution No. 667 was
then presented and read by the Clerk. Whereupon Mr. Chas. Ward and
Arch Dixon addressed the Council and asked that the petition.and
resolution be laid over for one week so that interested parties might
become better acquainted with their content and purpose. Mayor Conrad
informed Mr. Ward and Mr. Dixon -that in order to get the matter before
the voters at the November election it would be necessary for the
Council to take immediate action. Councilman Stevens moved that
Resolution No. 667 be laid over one week. This motion was lost for
want of a second. On motion by Huston seconded by Marion Resolution
No. 667 was passed and adopted by the following vote:
AYES: Councilmen Marion, Huston, King, Conrad.
NOES: Councilman Stevnes.
ABSENT: None.
Donation tD Ass In' The Clerk read a letter from the Association of Unemployed signed
of unemployed
by its president and secretary requesting that the City Council ap—
propriate the sum of $50.00 per week for the purpose of aiding needy
families. On motion by King seconded by Stevens the City Council was
authorized to appropriate the sum of $50.00`per`"week for a period of
four weeks for the above purpose; same to be paid to the Chamber of
Commerce and by them in turn to be paid over to the Association of
Unemployed.
Ref uiid On motion by Huston seconded by Marion the Building. Department
was authorized to refund $15.00 on -account of permit charged the
M. E. Church for moving a church building on to its property provided
that this refund can be legally made.
Permission to The request of W. R. McKee for permission to move:. certain small
move bldgs.
buildings without the formality of inspection or the payment of'a
permit fee was referred to the Building and Improvement Committee
for their recommendations.
Request for The request of Josephine Cooper for reduction of hotel lease

At this time, 10:50 Al, the Council recessed for executive
session. Council again called to order at.11:10 AM.
Special course Mr. John Dorfner, representing the University of Southern

California, addressed the Council relative to special citizen-
ship and public administration courses to be held in Los Angeles
June 13th to 17th, inclusive.: No action -was taken.by the Council.
Resolution No.668 - The Clerk presented and read Resolution No. 668 authorizing
the Mayor and City Clerk to effect an oil lease on behalf of thb
City and with the pacific Exploration Company, Ltd. On motion
by Marion seconded by King Resolution No. 669 was passed and
adopted by the following vote:
AYES: Councilmen Marion, Huston, King, Conrad.
NOES:: Councilman Stevens.
ABSENT: None .
Councilman Stevens suggested that the lease should require
a payment of $100,000.00 cash instead of the same sum from ot.l
production.
Volunt-ecr Fire Fire Chief Sargent addressed the Council and recommended

that the Volunteer Fire Department be paid on the basis of
$12.00 each per month instead.of the.present rate, claiming
that this would effect a saving to the City in the ,amount of
approximately.$900 per year. On motion by Stevens seconded
by Marion the matter was referred to the police and Fire
Committee with rower to act.
DciiiandU On motion by Stevens seconded by Marion demands approved
by the Finance Committee were ordered paid.
The Clerk read a letter from James S. Lawshe, manager of
the Huntington Beach Company, in which Mr. Lawshe recommended
that no further improvement on the beach front be made until
the matter of oil drilling on the beach was disposed of.
Letter reeuc5ting The Clerk read a letter from Mr. F.E.$undy.asking.that the

be i-euuced. City Council reduce the oil derrick license from $50.00 per year
to $12.00 per year. Matter referred to the Oil and Industry
Committee for its investigation and report at next meeting.
Application to The application -of Marcus Howard and Roy Smith to have

removed - trees removed from in front of their property was referred to
the Superintendent of Streets.
On motion by King seconded by Huston Council adjourned
until 10:-00 AM, Monday May 2;
of the City Council.
