HomeMy WebLinkAbout1932-07-18150 MINUTES City Hall Monday, July loth, 1932 a Pursuant to adjournment of July 5th, the City Council met and eras called to order at 10 ; 00 A. M . by Ila.yor Conrad. Councilmen present; Conrad,L�larion,Huston,Stevens,King. Councilmen absent; None Letter from Business The Clerk read a, letter from the Business Menus Association Men's Association thanking the Council for the it-uprovement on the beach front. Comfort stations The Clerk presented and read a petition signed by a number for beach -of business men requesting the Council to provide space and build comfort stations on the easterly portion of the city owned beach front for the purpose of allowing public tenting. Mr. C. G. lard addressed the Council relative to this natter and said that he believed that it would bring more business to the city and agreed that a small charge for ground rental would not be out of order. On motion by King seconded by Huston the City Engineer was directed to prepare a sketch and an estimate of the cost for constructing two comfort stations and present his estimate at 10;00 o'clock July loth. Report of St. Sup't Superintendent of Streets Henry idirth submitted a written. on lights report to the effect that he had cut out 175 street lights for the purpose of economy. Petition to have Ralph E. Hawes and I.C.Clark petitioned the Council to trees removed remove eucalyptus trees in front of their properties located at the corner of Crest and Main. Matter referred to Henry Wirth Superintendent of Streets. The Clerk read a letter addressed to the City Treasurer Let'Ger from Sup t -of State Banks and signed by the Superintendent of State Banks of California rejecting the City Treasurer's claim for $7,300.15 for the reason that the State Superintendent of Banks doubted the justice and validity of the claim. Letter ordered filed., Letter f rom The Clerk read a, letterfrom T. B Talbert offering to sell T. B. Talbert to the City a portion of'Lots 1,2 and 3, Block 404, Vista Del Mar, for street purposes at the price of $150.00. After some discussion, on motion by Huston seconded by King, the City Clerk was authorized and directed to make the purchase at a cost not to exceed_ $150.00. Application to oper- The application .of J. De Guelle for permission to operate ate restaurant on pier a restaurant on the municipal pier was referred to the Beach and Pier Committee for report at 10:00 A.M.July. 19th. 1 1 �'s .4 A 1 rA� Superior Oil Co. On motion by Huston seconded by Marion permission was granted the Superior Oil Company to construct and operate gasoline pump and tank on their property, Lot 10, Block 114, service to be for the officers and employees of the 2 hours parking Applications for license approved License denied Report from Ass to of Unemployed Final reading - Ord. NO-354 Letter from League of Municipalities Oil d.e-r.r.ick -properly guyed Demand Superior Oil Company only. W. R. Osborne, president of the Chamber of Commerce informed the Council that he had made a canvass of the business houses along Main Street relative to two hours parking, that he had made.36 calls and found that 18 were against the parking ordinance, 17 for -and one neuter. Mr. Osborne suggested that the present ordinance remain in effect until after Labor Day_, at which time he expected the Business Men to petition the Council for repeal of the ordinance. On motion by King seconded by Stevens the following license applications were approved and license ordered issued: Dwight W. Clapp, lunch stand at Life -guard Station No.l. Diamond IQQ Co.. ice sales stand rear of 580 Ocean Ave. Henry Talbert, lunch room 580 Ocean Avenue. A.C.Murdy, creamery products sales, rear of 580 Ocean Ave. The application of Frank Swartz for license to peddle peanuts and popcorn on the P.E. Right of Way west of 23d. and east of. First streets was denied for the reason that Mr. Swartz does not have permission from the p.E.Railway Company to operate on their property. The Association of,Unemployed submitted a report covering receipts and disbursements for the past month and informed the Council that a similar application would be filed.on the 19th asking for further donation to help feed. the needy. The Clerk gave Ordinance No. 354 its second and final reading and on motion by King seconded by Stevens, Ordinance No. 354 was passed and adopted by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen ?tea.rion,Huston,Stevens,King,Conrad. NOES: None ABSENT: None . A letter frog the League of Municipalities asking various cities for additional subscriptions was referred to the Finance Committee. Councilman Marion informed the Council that the oil. derrick in the vicinity of the residence of Rob't. M. Hager had been properly guyed to the satisfaction of himself and Mr. Hager. On motion by Stevens seconded by Marion demands approved by the Finance Committee were ordered paid. Volunteer firemen to S<a.n Diego con- vention On motion by Huston_ seconded by Marion the sum of $211.00 was appropriated to cover expense account of Jack Killian and Dvvight 52 3 Clapp, volunteer firemen, representatives at the July 25,26, 27 and 28th convention to be held in San Diego. Additional parking Chief of Police Keller recommended that additional along Ocean Ave. i,,arking be made along the southerly side of Ocean Avenue for automobile parking purposes. Matter referred to henry Wirth, Street Superintendent. Ocean Ave. parking to Councilman Stevens recommended that the parking along be cleared of weeds Ocean Avenue be cleared of ,-seeds. Matter referred. to the Street Superintendent. On motion by King seconded. by Stevens the Council adjourned until 10:00 A.M., Tuesday July 19th.
