MINUTES
City Hall, Monday August 27, 1934•
Pursuant to adjournment of August 20th, 1934', the City Council
met and was called to order at 7:30 P M by Mayor Talbert.
Councilmen present: Marion,Chamness,Tovatt,Warner, Talbert.
Councilmen absent: None'.
Wm. Curnutt, manager of the local baseball team, appeared.
before the Council and presented an itemized statement covering
certain improvements furnished by the ball club and asked that
the City Council reimburse the club. On motion by Chamness
seconded by Marion, the City Council appropriated the sum of
$263.38 to reimburse the baseball club for improvements made
on the grounds.
J. S. Denny, President of the Garden Club, made a verbal
request for permission to solicit funds during the Flower Show
to be held in the Memorial Hall September 20th and 21st, and
that the Council waive the customary $5.00 per day charge. On
motion by.Warner seconded by Marion, the request was granted.
Sewage Disposal Chairman Warner recommended that further investigation be

made relative to the .construction of the new sewage disposal
plant before submitting recommendations.
Drill On motion by Chamness seconded by Warner, the Volunteer

Fire Department was given permission to hold three drill
practices per month.
Fire District City Attorney Overacker informed the Council that he had
not found any provisions in the statutes whereby the City
could extend its fire district beyond the City limits. Council-
man Marion said he believed interested oil operators on property
adjoining the northerly city limits would be willing to create a
fund for the purpose of reimbursing the city when its fire trucks
might�be called for in the future. Councilman Marion was retained
on the committee to make further report and recommendations.
Bids The matter of advertising for bids for collection and dis-

posal of the city garbage was deferred until the first meeting
in September.
Red Light The request of Chief Gelzer for the installation of ad-

ditional red light signals was referred to the Police and Fire
Committee for their recommendations at next meeting.
The complaint of Rose F Griffith against an onion and
garlic drying plant near the northerly city limits was read
and,-e:fter some discussion, the Chief of yolice and City Clerk
were autho,rized:to investigate and report at next meeting, also

to call the attention of the operators to a letter written June
23d2 1933, in which they agreed to discontinue operation of the
plant.
On motion by Tovatt seconded by Marion, the application of
Max Schenfield to erect an electric sign at 440 Main Street
was approved.
Sign Ord. The Mayor instructed the City Engineer and City Attorney to
prepare and present a new sign ordinance at next meeting of the
Council.
Portable seats- Engineer Overmyer presented an estimate for furnishing portable
Ball ground
seats at the baseball grounds. His estimate of cost was $500.00
for five hundred seats. On motion by Warner seconded by Tovatt, the
_ matter was tabled. Matter of purchasing a piano by the City for the
Memorial Hall was tabled.
Salary - On motion by Marion seconded by Chamness, the salary of the City
City Attorney
Attorney was fixed at $125.00 per month beginning August 1st, 1934
and continuing at the pleasure of the Council.
Suit against Attorney Overacker informed the Council that the City of Hunting -

ton Beach and its Fire Chief had been sued for approximately $12,000.00
on account of injury alleged to have been sustained by Roy P Watt.
Attorney Overacker advised the Council that it should authorize
Attorney Otto Jacobs of Santa Ana to act in behalf of the City in the
above named case and, on motion by Marion seconded by Chamness, Otto
Jacobs of Santa Ana was employed to represent the City of Huntington
Beach and its Fire Chief in the case of Watt vs City of Huntington
Beach,without additional cost or attorney fees to the City of
Huntington Beach and in accordance with terms provided in the Travelers
Insurance Company's policy now on file in the office of the City Clerk.
City Victorious Attorney Overacker reported that in the license case, City of

victorious.
Councilman Warner informed the Council that he and Attorney Overacker
had been appointed by the Orange County League of Municipalities on a
committee to investigate and make recommendations concerning proposed
gasoline tax legislation. The City Council took the matter under ad-
visement but made no recommendations.
Rate_of pay On motion by Marion seconded by Chamness, the hourly rate of pay for

Budget On motion by Marion seconded by Tovatt, the City budget, as prepared
by the City Controller and revised by the City Council, was adopted.
