HomeMy WebLinkAbout1934-11-05' 342 _/r MINUTES City Hall, Monday Nov. 5th, 1934. 1 The regular meeting of.the City Council was called to order at 7:30 P. M. by Mayor Talbert. Councilmen present: Marion,Chamness,Warner, Tovatt,Talbert. Councilmen absent: None. MinutesThe Clerk presented and read the Minutes for the month of October and, .on motion by Chamness seconded by Marion, same were :approved as read. Re.auest for -Police The Clerk read a letter from Superintendent Jones of the to patrol school grounds -at night Huntington Beach Union High School requesting that night policemen be instructed to patrol the school.grounds whenever it is convenient to do so. Chief of Police Gelzer stated that this was being done and the Council instructed Chief Gelzer to continue the nrac_tice. Appropriation for The Clerk read a letter from the Chamber of Commerce request - Armistice Day ing the sum of $150.00 to defray expenses of the Huntington Beach band and $100.00 to cover expense of float representing the City on Armistice Day and, on motion by Chamness seconded by Tovatt, the Council approp- riated the sum of $225.00. Lunches- The request of Chief Gelzer for funds to cover expense of Police lunches for out of town police officers during Armistice Day was Officers f referred to the Legion Armistice Day.Committee. Application The application of Albert S Williams for permission to operate a wine and beer stand on Lots 17 and 19, Block 516 was ordered tabled and the City Clerk directed to advise Mr. Williams that the Council did not think it advisable to open such a stand so.close to the elementary school. Quit -claim deed The Clerk read quit -claim deed of J. C. Argue covering & Reso.#719 certain portions of 18th, 19th, 20th,. 21st, 22d and 23rd Streets, also Resolution 719 of the City Council accepting said quit -claim and, on motion by Marion seconded by Tovatt, Resolution 719 was passed and adopted by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen Marion, Chamness, Tovatt, Warner, Talbert. NOES: None. ABSENT: None. P T A. On motion by Warner seconded by Talbert, the request of the P. T. A. for free use of the City Auditorium October 27th, 1934 was granted. Audit of The Clerk informed the City Council that the audit of the City Books city books by Crenshaw, Diehl and Wright had been completed and was now on file in the office of the Clerk and open to public inspection. # 3 2 1 P P & M R Taxes The Clerk informed the Council that the following oil companies had not completed payments of their 1934 personal property and mining right taxes: Vicaroo Oil Company, Ltd. $185.61 Camroo Oil Company 61.20 Macroo Oil Company 384.37 Simaroo Oil Company 213.89 The above companies claiming exemption for the reason that certain taxes had been paid to the State of California. The matter was referred to the City Attorney to submit his opinion at the next meeting of the City Council. On motion by Warner seconded by Chamness, the Mayor and City Clerk were authorized to execute lease agreement for sewer pipe line crossing across the Southern Pacific Railway Company property east of First Street. Monthly Reports The Clerk read monthly reports of the City Treasurer, City Clerk, Chief of Police, City Judge, City Engineer, Superintendent of Streets, Building Inspector, and on motion by Warner seconded by Marion, same were accepted and ordered filed. Ord.379 The Clerk gave Ordinance No. 379, amending license ordinance, its Passed second and final reading and, on motion by Warner seconded by Chamness, same was passed and adopted by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen Marion, Chamness, Warner, Tovatt, Talbert. NOES: None. ABSENT: None. Ord. #38o Ordinance No. 380, amending dog license, was given its second and Passed final reading at this time and, on motion by Marion seconded by Tovatt, same was passed and adopted by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen Marion, Chamness, Warner, Tovatt, Talbert. NOES: None. ABSENT: None. H B Coop. EX. #6 Mr. Ford, representing the Huntington Beach Cooperative Exchange Unit #6, addressed the Council and asked that the City pay city and county taxes totaling $25.33 on Lots 22 and 23 in Block 1002 Vista Del Mar Tract. Mr. Ford explained that this property had been used for gardening purposes for the relief of the unemployed. Mr. Ford was referred to the Chamher of Commerce for their consideration and, on motion by Marion seconded by Chamness, the discarded Fordson tractor at the city yard was ordered sold to the Huntington Beach Cooperative Unit #6 for the price of $1.25. Demands Demands approved by the Finance Committee were ordered paid, on motion by Tovatt seconded'by Chamness. 17th St.Park C. W. Patrick addressed the City Council and made an offer of $2500.00 for the 17th Street park for the purpose of erecting a de- hydrating plant. Mr. Patrick was told that the Council would take the matter under advisement. 344 Vacation Fire Chief Sargent was granted a two weeks vacation ---- commencing November 10th. Amplifiers- The .matter of installing amplifiers, on the Memorial Hall Memo Hall stage at a cost of $203.50 was referred to the building committee for its recommendation, on motion by Warner seconded by Marion. Wheel Tax On motion by Chamness seconded by Tovatt, the matter of amending the wheel tax ordinance was deferred until next meeting. Piano Mayor Talbert called the Council's attention to the City's need of a new piano for the Memorial Hall. Action deferred until next meeting. Rentals Councilman Tovatt called attention to rental del-inque' ne es on the pier concessions, and after some discussion, the matter was referred to the City Attorney and Councilman Chamness to in- vestigate and report back at next meeting.
