HomeMy WebLinkAbout1935-01-075® MINUTES City Hall, Monday, January 7th, 1935 The regular meeting of the City Council was called to order at 7:30 P. M. by Mayor Talbert. Councilmen present: Talbert, Marion, Chamness, Tovatt, Warner. _-_- Councilmen absent None. On motion b Chamness seconded b Marion Minutes for the month Y Minutes y y of December were approved as read. Cafe On motion by Marion seconded by Chamness, the application of H. Anderson and Ed Lawson to serve lunches and sell cigars at 406 Ocean �. Avenue was approved. No action was taken on that part of the ap- plication asking permission to conduct card games and sell beer. Cafe The application of M. Zigelman for license to operate a cafe } and serve beer and wine at 804 Ocean Avenue, Huntington Inn, was referred back to the health department for its approval, on motion by Marion seconded by Tovatt. Garage on On motion by Chamness seconded by Tovatt, the City. Engineer beach was authorized to sell the caretaker's cabin on the beach front for the sum of $40.00 with the understanding that same be moved outside the city limits by the buyer. The same motion authorized the city engineer to proceed with the construction of a 12 x 18 stucco garage to be located near the caretaker's new building at - .- - - .- an estimated cost of $116.92. Girl Scouts' City Engineer Overmyer submitted an estimate of $962.00 for cabin the cost of erecting a cabin.30 x 50 at Lake Park for the girl r_ scouts. Action was deferred by the Council for the purpose of further investigation and the Clerk directed to suggest to Mrs. Kirkpatrick that the girl scouts meet at the Woman's Club. W. R.C. On motion by Marion seconded by Tovatt, the $5.00 charge for the use of Memorial Hall December 8th by the W. R. C. was waived. -, Rent- On motion by Chamness seconded by Marion, an appropriation of C of C $200.00 for payment of rent of Chamber of Commerce building was - - approved. -t Paint - Lyndon Wells and W. R. Higgins jointly, submitted an estimate Memo Hall for painting the following: Rebronzing arch at the rear and above the stage, Memorial Hall $25.00 Kalsomining side walls between hall and lobby, r side walls only 6.00 Men's rest room 18.00 Hall between lobby and kitchen 5.00 Front doors 16.00 Bracket lights in front 3:00 Clean and paint all metal and wood sash inside and out 137.00 On motion by Chamness seconded by Warner, 51 the bid was accepted and the 1 Library Board - Resignations Ruby M Hasson - Library Board work ordered done. The Clerk read resignations of Mrs. Frank H Cole and Raymond M. Elliott of the Library Board and, on motion by Marion seconded by Tovatt, the resignations were accepted and a vote of thanks given for their services to the Library. The appointment, by Mayor Talbert of Ruby M Hasson to finish the unexpired term of Mrs. Frank H. Cole on the Library Board was approved. Y -Date of expiration of term being June 30th, 1937. Mrs". Mollie Hardy- The appointment by Mayor Talbert of Mrs. Mollie Hardy to finish Library Board the unexpired term of Raymond M Elliott on the Library Board was approved. - Date of expiration of term being June 30th, 1935• Monthly reports The Clerk presented and read monthly reports of the City Clerk, City Treasurer, Superintendent of Streets, Building Inspector, City Judge and Chief of Police and, on motion by Marion seconded by Chamness, same were accepted and ordered filed. On motion by Chamness seconded by Tovatt, demands approved by the Demands Finance Committee were ordered paid.. City Attorney Overacker informed the Council that the damage Damage claim - Ray P. Watt claim of Ray P Watt on account of alleged injuries sustained at 15th and Orange was set for March 6th and 7th in the Santa Ana Superior Court. Back rent Attorney Overacker informed the Council that Harvey Walker had paid $$25.00 to apply on his pier concession rental and that he promised to pay an additional $100.00 within the next few days and follow with regular monthly payments until the account is cleared. Dogs on Pier Councilman Chamness said that complaints had been made of dogs running loose on the pier. The matter was referred to the beach and pier committee. City Engineer Overmyer informed the Council that the owner of the building at 5th and Orange had promised to make necessary repairs but up to date nothing had been done about the matter. Mr. Overmyer was directed to again communicate with the owner and report again at next meeting. Heating Plant Councilman Tovatt, chairman of the building committee, informed the Council that he had made an examination of the City Hall heating r plant and it was his opinion that it was not necessary to install new boiler equipment but he did advise the installation of a new automatic heater and also the insulation of pipe lines to conserve heat. The matter was referred to Engineer Overmyer to get an estimate of cost. LI 352 Automatic heater- Engineer Overmyer recommended that a new automatic heater Fire Depat. be installed in the Fire Department. He was directed to check cost and report back at next meeting.
