HomeMy WebLinkAbout1935-06-19MINUTES City Hall, Wednesday June 19th, 1935. Pursuant to adjournment of June 12th, the City Council met and was called to order at 7:30 P AI by Mayor Talbert. Councilmen present: Chamness,- Tovatt, Warner, Talbert. Councilmen absent : Marion. The Chair appointed Councilman Chamness on the finance committee. Concession - Dwight Clapp appeared before the Council and asked that an electric line electric line be run to his concession at the life guard station on the beach. On motion by Warner seconded by Tovatt the request was referred to the beach committee and city engineer with power to act providing the a cost does not exceed $35-.00. Appointments on The Clerk read a letter from Margaret Clifton, librarian, informing Library Board the Council that the three year term of Mrs. Ruby Hasson and Judge C.P. I Damage to Pier Patton of•the library board of trustees would expire on June 30th, 1935, whereupon Mayor Talbert announced that he was reappointing Mrs. Ruby Hasson and Judge C P.Patton to serve on the board of trustees of the library for three years beginning July 1st, 1935 and, on motion by Warner seconded by Chamness, the appointment was confirmed by the Council unanimously. The Clerk read a letter from Ergineer.Overmyer stating that damage had been done to one of the girders and two haunches of the pier and recommended that repairs be made immediately. His estimate of cost was $150.00. Mr. Overmyer stated that in his opinion the\ amage was done by one of the boats landing at the pier but that he had investigated with the result that both Mr. Morrison and Mr.•Brunner denied that any damage had been done by their boats and on motion by Warner seconded by Chamness, the city engineer was authorized and directed to make the necessary repairs as per his estimate. Insurance - On motion by Warner seconded by Tovatt, the matter of insurance Pier protection to the pier was referred to the City Attorney for his recommend- ation and the City Clerk was directed to ascertain,if possible, for the City to secure a policy that would protect it against damage. The matter of investigating and determining who was responsible for damage to the pier was referred to the City Attorney and Chief of Police with instructions to collect the amount required for repairs. Firecrackers On motion by Chamness seconded by Tovatt, the Joseph Rodman Post was given permission to sell firecrackers for July 4th. Cancellation of The Clerk read cancellation of employment contract between the contract City and Engineer O.A.Stone and, on motion by Warner seconded by Tovatt, the Mayor and City Clerk were authorized to execute the same in behalf of the city. ' 0 The Clerk gave Ordinance #381, regulating signs, its Ord. #381- Passed second and final reading at this time and, on motion by Warner seconded by Chamness, Ordinance #381 was passed and adopted by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen Chamness, Warner, Tovatt, Talbert. NOES: None. ABSENT: Councilman Marion. Ord. #386- Following motion by Tovatt seconded by Chamness, that Ordinance Ame nde d #386 be amended so as to allow the operation of a 25 horse power motor within the restricted district; motion put and carried by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen Chamness, Warner, Tovatt, Talbert. NOES: None ABSENT: Councilman liar -ion. The Clerk then gave Ordinance #386 as amended, its first reading. Contract The Clerk read contract between the City and F.S.Currie for preparing plans and specifications for the neV sewage plant and,.on motion by Warner seconded by Chamness, the Mayor.and City Clerk were authorized to execute same on behalf of the City. Protest against A formal protest from the Ambassador and Wilshire Oil Companies taxation. against taxation for the year 1934-1935 on mineral rights was read and ordered filed. Demands On motion by Tovatt seconded by Chamness, demands approved by the finance committee were ordered paid. Supervisor- Upon recommendation of Councilman Chamness and on motion by Warner Play ground seconded by Chamness, Miss Josephine Derigo was appointed play ground supervisor for a period beginning June 20th and ending September 3rd at a salary of $80.00 per month. Special officers On motion by Warner seconded by Chamness, the request of Chief July 4th Gelzer for employment of ten officers July 4th was referred to the police committee with power to act. Budget - The City Clerk called the Councils attention to the new budget 1935-1936 for 1935-1936 and the Chair asked that the Council meet in executive session at 7:30 P.M.
