HomeMy WebLinkAbout1937-05-1062 Weeds Hearing objections on weeds MINUTES City Hall, 11onday, May loth, 1937 Pursuant to adjournment of May 3rd, the City Council met and was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by Mayor Warner. Councilmen present: Morehouse, Chamness, Henrickson, Warner. Councilmen absent Talbert (Councilman Talbert arrived at 8:10 P.M.) The Clerk read a certificate of the Superintendent of Streets to the effect that notices had been posted -in accordance with law and Resolution No. 772, providing for weed cleaning. This being the date set by the City Council for hearing objections to the Council's action in adopting Resolution No. 772 for the destruction of weeds, the Clerk informed the Council that no written objections had been received. The Mayor inquired if there was any one in the audience who wished to make objections, there being none, on motion by Henrickson seconded by Morehouse, the Superintendent of Streets was directed to proceed.with the work of weed cleaning in accordance with the provisions of Reso- lution No. 772. Lights on east side The Clerk read a letter from Harry Stephenson requesting that lights be turned on in front of his property on Huntington Avehue. It being agreeable to the Council, the Mayor instructed the Superintendent of Streets to transfer lights as suggested in Mr. Stephenson's letter. Application- An application signed by Mrs. K.M.Holsombach for position Mrs. Holsombach as play ground supervisor was read, referred to the beach and pier committee and ordered filed. Application- The application of A.P. Nelson for the position of City City Attoy Attorney was read and ordered filed. Beach cleaning The Clerk read a letter signed by M. Reddinger of Los Angeles relative to beach cleaning. The letter was ordered filed. Lots in Wesley Park The Clerk read a letter from the office of the State Con- troller to the effect that permission had been granted the City to purchase Lots 1, 2, 3, 4, 8,,9 and 10, Block 812, Wesley Park Section and Lots 33 and 35 in Block 813, Wesley Park Section and Mayor Warner was authorized to take the matter up with the County Tax Collector. Contract The Clerk read a contract between the City of Huntington Beach and Dwight K. Clapp leasing certain portions of the beach for the rental of umbrellas and sale of refreshments. Band Stand On motion by Chamness seconded by Henrickson, the City Engineer was directed to proceed to build a band stand on the beach similar to the one constructed last year. This upon request and recommen- dation of the Chamber of Commerce. L •Y Recess At this time, 8:05 p.m., the Mayor declared a recess. 8:40 F.M. Council again called to order; all members present. Demands On motion by Chamness seconded by Talbert, demands approved ` by the Finance Committee, were ordered paid. H.B.Riding Club The Clerk read a letter from the Associated Chamber of -Commerce addressed to the local Chamber of Comrerce requesting that the City appropriate money to help defray expenses of the Huntington Beach Riding Club on a trip to San Francisco during the latter part of May. The letter stated that the rodeo to be staged•in San Francisco would be of value as an advertising medium to -Orange County and, on motion by Henrickson seconded by Chamness, the Council appropriated the sum•of $200.00 to be paid to the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce for advertising purposes. Board of The Clerk called the Council's attention to a section in the Equalization 'Charter providing for changing the date of meeting of the Board of Equalization and stated that it would be necessary to amend the city ordinance changing the date of meeting of the rate. board. He also stated that the tax ordinance was badly in need of amendments to I �` - bring it up to date. City Attly The following motion by Councilman Henrickson: "That the City appointed - Council appoint Thomas H. Kuchel as City Attorney at a salary of i c $135.00 per month plus $50.00 per month for stenographic expense, effective as of this date. Attorney Kuchel to serve during the pleasure of the City Council". The motion was seconded by Council- man Chamness. -Councilman Morehouse said he believed,it would be better to delay action of the appointment of a city attorney for i a few days but if the rest of the members of the Council desired to make an appointment at this time, he would vote for the appointment. _Motion put and carried unanimously. i i Page 3 - May 10, 1937• � Waive Street opening - On motion by K-enrickson seconded by Chamness, , charge on east the City Engineer was authorized to waive street opening side charges on the unimproved east side streets recently opened by the Southern.California Water Company for the installation of new hydrants. The reason for waiving the charges being that the water company had made no charge for hydrants or their installation. a Fishing Barge Councilman Chamness informed the Council that he had been unable to get in touch with C. K. Morrison relative to the o operation of a fishing bargeJ.off the Huntington Beach coast. Councilman Chamness stated that he feared if the matter was ' i delayed much longer the season would be over before a fishing barge was in operation and, on motion by Henrickson seconded by Morehouse, the Clerk was directed to -request Mr..Morrison to appear before the City Council not later than Monday, May 17th or advise the City Council by letter just what his in- tentions are relative to the operation of a fishing boat during this season.
