Minutes
City Hall, Monday, February 14, 1936
Pursuant to adjournment of February 7th, the City Council met and
was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by mayor Warner.
Councilmen present: Morehouse, Talbert, Henrickson, Warner.
Councilmen absent : Chamness (Councilman Chamness arrived at 7:50 P.M.)

Great/Petro, On motion by Henrickson seconded by Morehouse, the Council autho-

rized the City Collector to accept the Great American Petroleum Company's
check in the amount of $55.03 in satisfaction of derrick license $72.00

and waste water bills in the amount of $18.00, same being the amount

allowed in the District Court of the United States as the City's portion

of the bankruptcy estate. The City Collector was authorized to cancel
the bills due.
Protest - The Clerk read a letter from S. R. Bowen in which the City Council's
Beer Parlor
on 5th Sty attention was called to the application of H. B. Carr to operate a beer
w
parlor at 214 - 5th Street and asked that the City Council make protest to
the State Board of Equalization in Santa Ana against issuing the license
and, on motion by Henrickson seconded by Morehouse, the City Council
entered its protest and directed the City Attorney to prepare and file
a protest and that the Mayor and City Clerk be authorized to sign same
on behalf of the City.

Water Co.
in reply to a recent letter from the City Council relative to the ex-
tension of water mains. The letter from the water company stated that
their manager, Mr. Anderson, was out of the city and would not return

until about February 17th at which time he and his engineer would be glad
to meet with the City Council and discuss the matter. The letter was
ordered filed.
Supervisor - The Clerk read a letter of recommendation from L. F. Coor, Principal of
Beach`�ront
the Avondale Graramar School, recommending Glenn Schafer for the position of
beach recreational supervisor. The letter was ordered filed.
H. B. News A letter from the Huntington Beach News asking that the City run
a one page advertisement in the issues of February 17th, 24th and March
• 3rd at a cost of $100.00 a page was read to the Council. On motion by
Henrickson seconded by Morehouse, the City Council appropriated the sum
of $200.00 and authorized Councilman Talbert, Councilman Morehouse and
the City Clerk to prepare a one page advertisement for the issues
February 24th and March 3rd.

Recess At this time, 8:00 P.M., the Mayor declared a recess.
Council again called to order at 8:30 P.M., all members
present.
Contract - On motion by Chamness seconded by Henrickson, the City

Attorney and beach and pier committee were authorized to prepare
a contract between the City of Huntington Beach and John H. Games
to operate live bait boats off the pier and submit same to the
City Council at its next meeting.
Application On motion by Chamness seconded by Morehouse, the application
approved
of F. J. Gillespie for license to operate service station at 301
Main Street was approved.
Application On motion by Henrickson seconded by Talbert, the application
approved
of Eva M. Mathews to operate hotel at 804 Ocean Avenue was approved.
Ord.#406 - The Clerk gave Ordinance No. 406, an ordinance providing

certain fire prevention measures in the oil field, its second and
final reading at this time and, on motion by Henrickson seconded by
Talbert, Ordinance No. 406 was passed and adopted by the following
vote:

NOES: Councilmen - None.
ABSENT: Councilmen— None.

Accident to,
The Clerk informed the Council
that J. R. Covington, 768 Orizaba
City car
Avenue, Long Beach, had not yet
replied to a letter dated January 16th
relative to an accident in which Mr. Covington was alleged to have
been responsible resulting to a damage of $21.18 to a city owned car
and, on motion by Talbert seconded by Henrickson, the City Attorney
was directed to write a letter to Mr. Covington calling his attention
to the balance and report results back to the City Council at an

Reso.4 - The Clerk presented and read Resolution No. calling the
calling election
General Municipal Election to be held Tuesday, April 12, 1938, and
appointing officers to serve do precinct boards and, on motion by
Talbert seconded by Chamness, Resolution No.-791) was passed and
adopted by the following vote:
AYES: Councilmen Morehouse, Chamness, Talbert, Henrickson, Warner.
NOES: Councilmen - None.
ABSENT: Councilmen - None.

Option on On motion by Henrickson seconded by Talbert, the City Attorney

frontage was directed to secure an option from the Mills Land and Water Company
for the purchase of beach frontage and acreage in the easterly part of
the City and submit same to the City Council at its next meeting and
that in the event the City Attorney is successful in securing the
option, he is further authflMized to prepare necessary 'resolutions and
ordinances for calling an election at the time of the general election

and submit same on Monday, February 21st, 1938, to the City Council.
Mr. Burley- On motion by Morehouse seconded by Henrickson, the City Attorney

was authorized to make Chas. Burleycamp an offer whereby the City
agrees to pay the full amount of the bonds _v.l and straight 4% interest

to date on delinquent assessment lots along Crest Avenue.

Floor for Mayor Warner informed the Council that in preparation of plans

for building the Lake Park building the matter of an oak floor had
been omitted whereupon Engineer Overmyer submitted the following bids
for -doing the work:

Each bid above providing floor to be laid and finished to the satis-
faction of the City Council. On motion by Talbert seconded by Chamness,
the contract was awarded to Hammond Bros. Corporation at their bid of

$355• 00 for No. 1 Common Red Oak as designated'in their alternate bid
No. 2.
Unsafe Engineer Overmyer called the Council's attention to derrick on
derrick
£ Lots 16, 18 and 20, Block 110 that is in dangerous condition of
collapsing on account of unsafe foundation. Action was deferred by
the City Council pending immediate action to repair same by the owners.
The Engineer was directed to keep the Council informed.
Sign at Engineer Overmyer stated that the owner of property at Five Points
5 points'
had asked that the City Council designate the kind of sign to be used
before she would take action to lease the ground to the City. The City
Engineer was directed to submit designs and cost of signs to be installed.
On motion by Henrickson seconded by Chamness, the Council ad-
journed until 7:30 P.M., Monday, February 21, 8.
