Council Chamber, City Hall,
Huntington Beach, Calif.
August 28, 1939
Pursuant to adjournment of August 21st, the City Council met and was
called to order at 7:30 P.M. by Mayor McCallen.
Councilmen present Morehouse,Chamness,Talbert,Henrickson, McCallen.
Councilmen absent: None.
On motion by Henrickson seconded by Talbert, the monthly report of the
Superintendent of Streets for the month of July was approved as read.
The Clerk read a letter from the Buxton Neon Sign Company asking the City
to renew their contract for the maintenance of the sign located on the arch
at the intersection of Main Street and Ocean Avenue. The letter was referred
to the City Engineer with recommendation that he contact other contractors
and report back at next meeting of the City Council.
Application - The Clerk presented and read application of the Southwest Exploration

Exp.Co.- Company to drill well known as State No. 22 and, on motion by Henrickson

was instructed to secure and submit the usual contract required.

City. There was considerable discussion relative to the advisability of the
city purchasing the property and the manner in which the city should make the
purchase. Councilman Talbert recommended a budget plan. Mayor McCallen
suggested calling a special bond election.

Water Company and try to work out some plan whereby the purchase may be made
agreeably with both buyer and seller. Motion put and carried by the following
vote:

NOES: Councilmen: None.

On motion by Henrickson seconded by Talbert, the City Clerk was

Adv. in News- Councilman Morehouse stated that it was his opinion that the City
Bond election
Council should in the Huntington Beach News acquaint the voters with the
facts concerning the City Council's action in calling a bond election to
purchase or construct a municipally owned water system and, on motion by i
Morehouse seconded by Henrickson, the committee heretofore appointed to
look into the matter of the purchase of a water system were authorized to
carry an advertisement in the Huntington Beach News as follows:
August 31st - one-half page
September 7th - one-half page
September 14th - one page
September 21st - one page
The committee was authorized to prepare copy for the above named -advertisement. !
Musicians' Councilman Chamness stated that he had been notified by Mr. Foster, Sec -

pavilion retary of the Orange County Musicians local to the effect that it will be
necessary to employ union musicians for the Old Timers' dance or the union 1
would be compelled to discontinue the "Esquires" playing on Saturday nights.
The matter was referred to the Mayor and the Music & Promotion committee to
investigate and act.

was granted a free permit for a merry-go-round to operate September lst to j

Resolution The Clerk read Resolution No. 849 establishing the salaries of the

by Henrickson seconded by Morehouse, Resolution No. 849 was passed and
adopted by the following vote:
AYES: Councilmen: Morehouse,Chamness,Talbert, Henrickson, McCallen,
NOES: Councilmen: None.
ABSENT: Councilmen: None.
On motion by Henrickson seconded by Chamness, the Council adjourned.
