Council Chamber, City Hall,
Huntington Beach, Calif.
September 25, 1939
Pursuant to adjournment of;September 5th, the City Council met
and was called to order at .7:30 P.M. by--Mayor-McCallen.
Councilmen present: Morehouse, Chamness; Talbert, Henrickson, McCallen.
Councilmen absent: None.
Damage to The Clerk read a letter from City Engineer Overmyer reporting to
mun. pier.
the Council damage to the municipal pier as of Sunday, September 24, 1939-
The letter stated that the storm struck the city between the hours of
• 12:00 o°clock noon and 1:00 oflclock P.M. and continued with increasing
Intensity until 8:00 o°clock P.M. of September 24th. The municipal pier
was subjected to severe battering with wind and waves and at 5:00 P.M.
September 24th, approximately 300 feet of the ocean end of the pier was
totally destroyed and, an motion by Talbert seconded by Chamness, the
letter was accepted and ordered filed and the City Clerk was directed
to notify the insurance company and give them a copy of the engineers
report. Motion put and carried unanimously.

Application - On motion by Chamness seconded by Henrickson, the application of
Mrs. Clapp
Lula B. Clapp to'install Neon sign at 104 Main Street was received and
approved..
Delegates to The.Clerk read a letter from the Huntington Beach Volunteer Fire
state Firemens'
Assn. Department asking for an appropriation of $100.00 to provide funds to
send delegates to the State Firemen°s Association at Monterey and, on
motion by Henrickson seconded by Chamness, the request was granted.
Application - The application of the Shell Oil Company for permit to erect
Shell Oil Co.
service station at the corner of 7th Street and Ocean Avenue was approved,

on motion by Talbert seconded by Morehouse, with the provision that the
matter of removing and replanting of trees be left to the discretion of
40 the city engineer and the park department.
Surety Bond - On motion by Henrickson seconded by Talbert, the surety bond of the
Two Mack Elec.
Co. Two Mack Electric Company was accepted and ordered filed.
On motion by Talbert seconded by Chamness, demands approved by the

Finance Committee were ordered paid.
Trash & Mayor McCallen called attention to the fact that trash and garbage
garbage
was being placed on the streets instead of the alleys and suggested that
notice be sent to all property owners requesting that all trash and
garbage be placed in the alley and, on motion by Henrickson seconded by
Talbert, the city engineer was instructed to notify all property owners
as of October lot that garbage and trash must be placed in the alley
unless there is no alley adjoining the property.

Ord. 430 - The Clerk presented and read Ordinance No. 430 relative to
First reading
appointment of officers to serve on election board, its first
reading at this time.
Leaks in sky The City Engineer was directed to look after the matter of
lights in memo,
hall. leaks in sky -lights on memorial hall and have same repaired.
Amendment to City Attorney Overacker submitted copy of the proposed.
Charter amendment to the Charter for increasing the Elementary School
Board to five members instead of three.
Armistice Day Harlan Reid addressed the Council relative to concessions
parade and parade of the American Legion on November llth. He was
asked to submit a letter to the City Council at next meeting
outlining the requirements of the Legion.
Sewer line The matter of extending the sewer line from its present
.termination on Joliet to Highway 39 was discussed. No action
was taken by the City Council.
On motion by Chamness seconded by Henrickson, the Council
adjourned.
