HomeMy WebLinkAbout1940-04-15• Demand Canvass votes General Municipal election 4-9-40 Resolution Moo 866 Result of election MINUTES Council Chamber, City Hall, Huntington 'Beach, California Monday, April 15, 1940 • Pursuant to adjournment of April 1st, the City Council met and was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by Mayor McCallen. Councilmen present; Morehouse, Chamness, Henrickson, Talbert, McCallen Councilmen absent: None. On motion by Talbert seconded by Chamness, demands approved • by the Finance Committee were ordered paid. The hour of 7:30 P.M. having arrived, the City Council pro- ceeded to canvass the results of the general municipal election held in the City of Huntington Beach April 9, 1940. The returns from the four consolidated election precincts were canvassed; absentee ballots were counted in the manner required by law; the • total absentee ballots were thirty-four (34) and the result of such count was as follows: Leland S. Chamness, Councilman 16 A. W. Morehouse, Councilman 28 Ira D. Critton, Councilman 3 Walter E. Dabney, Councilman 1 George M. Gelzer, Councilman Fred T. Grable, Councilman 1z Thayne H. Nutt,' Treasurer 1 Total votes cast: 34 •� Whereupon the City Clerk presented and read Resolution No. 866 entitled; "A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA, CANVASSING THE RESULTS OF THE GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION HELD IN SAID CITY ON TUESDAY, APRIL 9, 194011, and, on motion by Councilman Chamness seconded by Councilman Talbert, Reso- lution No. 866 was passed and adopted by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen: Morehouse, Chamness, Talbert, Henrickson, r McCallen. NOES: Councilmen: None. ABSENT: Councilmen: None. STATEMENT OF RESULT OF ELECTION 1. The whole number of votes cast in the city of Huntington Beach including votes is 1609. all absentee 2. M. Clegg the newly elected city treasurer and, on motion by Talbert seconded by Chamness, same was accepted and ordered filed. The Clerk read a letter from the retiring assistant city treasurer Grace M. Brose and, on motion by Henrickson seconded by Morehouse,, ---the City Clerk was directed to write a letter to Mrs. Brose expressing appreciation of the City Council for her efficient service during the time she. was with the City of Huntington Beach. Mayor McCallen addressed those present in a short talk and presented Councilman Henrickson with a gold key to the City of Huntington Beach. Mayor McCallen stated that it had been a pleasure to work with Councilman Henrickson and that he hoped that sometime in the future Mr. Henrickson would again be willing to offer his services to the City. Councilman Henrickson responded with a statement that it had been a pleasure for him to serve for four years on the City Council. There being no further business to come before the retiring City Council, on motion by Talbert seconded by Chamness, the Council adjourned. ATTE O. 'v:) 1 0 Oath of office Council Chamber, City Hall, Huntington Beach, California Monday, April 15, 1940 Immediately following adjournment of the old City Council the new members were called to order by Mayor McCallen. Whereupon Mayor McCallen administered the oath of office to City Clerk Chas. R. Furr. The City Clerk then administered the oath of office to the following nOwly elected officials: Councilman Leland S. Chamness Councilman .A. W. Morehouse Councilman Fred T. Grable City Treasurer W. M. Clegg Each of the above named officials took their seats around the council table. HQ M. McCallen The Clerk announced that the next order of business would be the mayor election of a mayor to serve during the ensuing two years. After a short talk Councilman Talbert moved that M. M. McCallen be made mayor of the City of Huntington Beach for the ensuing two years. The motion was seconded by Councilman Grable and, on motion by Morehouse seconded by Chamness, the nominations were closed and M. M. McCallen was unanimously elected to the office.of mayor of the City of Huntington Beach for the ensuing two year period. Letter to On motion by Talbert seconded by Chamness, the City Clerk was retiring Council- man directed to write a letter to retiring Councilman Henrickson expressing Henrickson appreciation for cooperation given the City Council during his term of off ice. Mayor McCallen informed those present that it was his wish as well as that of the other members of the City Council that all appointive offices be continued as in the past and that no changes were contemplated. Short addresses were made by the Mayor and each of the City Council- men, City Clerk and City Treasurer. There being no further business to come before the Council, on motion by Talbert seconded by Chamness, the Council adjourned until 7:30 P. M. Monday, April 22, 1940.
