HomeMy WebLinkAbout1940-07-29• Ord. #438 - first reading Ord. #439 first reading Extension of time on pier Reso. f871 State Well -31 Mrs. Hardy re- appointed to Library Board MINUTES Council Chamber, City Hall, Huntington Beach, California Monday, July 29, 1940 Pursuant to adjournment of July 8th, the City Council met and w was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by Mayor McCallen. Councilmen present: Chamness, Grable, Morehouse, McCallen. Councilmen absent: Talbert. The Clerk gave Ordinance No. 438, an ordinance regulating traffic, its first reading at this time. • The Clerk gave Ordinance No. 439, an ordinance providing for stop signals on Ocean Avenue at Main Street, its first reading at , this time. On motion by Chamness seconded by Grable, the City Attorney was authorized to submit a copy of Ordinance No. 439 to the Depart- ment of Public Works for their approval or rejection. The Clerk presented and read a letter from Elliott -Stroud - Seabrook asking for a further extension in which to complete recon- struction of the municipal pier until August 10, 1940 and, on motion by'Ohamness seconded by Grable, the time was extended to and including August loth, 1940 without penalty. The Clerk presented and read Resolution No. 871, providing for the abandonment of certain streets and, on motion by Chamness seconded by Morehouse, Resolution No. 871, was passed and adopted by the follow- ing vote: AYES: Councilmen: Chamness, Grable, Morehouse, McCallen. NOES: Councilmen: None. ABSENT: Councilmen: Talbert. , The Clerk read application of the Southwest Exploration Company for permit to drill oil well known as State No. 31. The application was accompanied by executed contract and blueprint and, on motion by Grable seconded by Morehouse, the application was accepted and the City Engineer authorized to deliver permit. The Clerk read a letter from the Secretary of the Huntington Beach Library to the effect that the term of office of Mrs. B. W. Hardy ex- pired as of June 30th and recommended that she be reappointed as a member of the Library Board for a term of three years. Mayor McCallen informed the Council that he had reappointed Mrs. Hardy on the Board and, on motion by Morehouse seconded by Chamness, the appointment was approved. „ Page 2, Minutes July 29, 1940 Hotel license On motion by Grable seconded by Chamness, the application of approved • Frank Harder for license to operate hotel and apartments at 108 - 5th Street was accepted and approved. Mayor McCallen informed the Council that he had met with officials Co . - settle- of the Southwest Exploration Company and that they had arrived at a ment of suit satisfactory understanding relative to the terms of that certain agree- ment now in effect between the City and the Southwest Exploration Company; that the Southwest Exploration Company had delivered a check to the City Treasurer in the amount of $6,170.23 covering payment in accordance with the above`named contract, whereupon the following motion was made by • Councilman Chamness: 'That the City accept the check from the South- 911 west Exploration Company and that the City Attorney be authorized to dismiss the suit now pending against the above named Company with prejudice". • Motion seconded by Councilman Grable, put and carried unanimously. Ford pickup On motion by Morehouse seconded by Grable, the City Controller was for trailer park authorized to purchase a used Ford pick-up for a price not to exceed the • sum of $65.00, same to be used at the municipal trailer park. Demands On motion by Chamness seconded by Morehouse, demands approved by the Finance Committee were ordered paid. ► Surety bond On motion by Morehouse seconded by Chamness, the surety bond of the Star Housemovers, Inc. was accepted and ordered filed. NOES: Councilmen: None. • ABSENT: Councilmen: Talbert. Mr. Cookerley The Clerk read a letter from Wm. N. Cookerley offering to sell to the City a full set of Corpus Juris for the sum of $350.00. The letter stated '• that the set is new and originally cost $750.00. The Clerk was directed to write Mr. Cookerley to the effect that the City had no immediate use for the set of books. S.R.A. work Engineer Overmyer informed the Council that the work being performed by S.R.A. labor was progressing satisfactorily but that the present contract would expire about September 1st and recommended that eight laborers be continued after that date and, on motion by Morehouse seconded by Chamness, the City Engineer was authorized to make application to the S.R.A. for eight laborers; that City Engineer Overmyer be designated as Sponsor's 0 p o Page 3, Minutes July 29, 194o agent and that the Mayor and City Clerk be authorized to execute the contract.
