Pursuant to adjournment of March Sth, the City Council met and was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by Mayor Talbert. Councilmen present: Henrickson,Grable, Hawes, Morehouse, Talbert. Councilmen absent: None. 11 Civilian The Clerk informed the Council that the following suggestions Defense Council were referred to the City Council by the Civilian Defense Council at its meeting of March llth: `• lat. That the Civilian Defense Council voted a request to the City • Council to purchase fifty helmets for use of additional members of the Civilian Defense Corps and, oniDtion by Grable seconded by More- house, the Civilian Defense Director was authorized to purchase, fifty additional helmets. 2d. To purchase and. install three additional red signal whistles, one to be installed at Ebert's Camp, another on 12th street and the third at the 0. C. Field plant at 21st and Palm and, on motion by Hawes seconded by Grable, the Civilian Defense Director was autho- rized to purchase and install the same. 3d. That the City Council have placards printed carrying emergency instructions and placed in all residences and business houses in the city and, on motion by Grable seconded by Hawes, the Director was authorized to purchase same. 4th. That signs be printed and placed in the front yards of all Block Wardens designating the name and address of the warden and, on motion by Henrickson seconded by Grable, the director was autho- rized to purchase the material e.nd make up the signs and install the same. Assembly Bills 'City Engineer Overmyer called the Council's attention to ' 961 & 962 Assembly Bi115961 and 962 relative to control and acquisition of portion of the shore lines. No action was taken by the City Council pending the return of Chairman of the Board of Supervisors from Sacramento. Golf Course Mayor Talbert informed the Council that a delegation of citizens was in the audience for the purpose of enlisting the sup- port of the City Council to take over the local golf course manage- ment. J. K. McDonald, George Wheat, Del Burry and others addressed • the Council and informed them that there was danger of losing the golf course if some support was not given in the matter of repairs and up -keep of the course. It was suggested that the present manager, Mr. Aleridge, be retained on a salary and that the City stand the ex- ' pense and receive the revenue from*the operation of the course. Mayor Talbert and members of the City Council were of the opinion that de- finite interest should be shown by the golfers in the way of support and interest. The matter was referred to the Council as a committee of a whole to meet with James Lawshe, manager of the Huntington Beach Company, at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, March l8th for further investigation. y 0 I 4 Page 2 - Minutes Mar. 15, 1943 ZZY Demands On motion by Hawes seconded by Henrickson, demands approved by the Finance Committee were ordered paid. Insurance The Clerk informed the Council that the present policy covering on pier the municipal pier expires March 19, 1943 and that he had on hand renewal of the policy now in force for a period of three years, pre- mium $4,500.00. The matter was taken under consideration and the Clerk directed to request the company furnishing the policy to give the City a thirty day extension so that the Council might decide just what action to take. `. Ord.#469 e The Clerk gave Ordinance No. 469, regulating traffic upon the . passed public streets of the City of Huntington Beach, its second and final reading and, on motion by Henrickson seconded by Morehouse, Ordinance No. 469 was passed and adopted by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen: Henrickson, Grable, Hawes, Morehouse, Talbert. NOES: Councilmen: None. ABSENT: Councilmen: None. Ord. 4470- The Clerk gave Ordinance No. 470, fixing and regulating the com- 4r passed pensation of city officers and employees, its second and final reading Salaries and, on motion by Hawes seconded by Grable, Ordinance No. 470 was passed and adopted by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen: Henrickson, Grable, Hawes, Morehouse, Talbert. NOES: Councilmen: None. ABSENT: Councilmen: None. Salaries The matter of increasing the salaries of the city'judge, the chief of police and the city treasurer ware, deferred until next meeting of the %- City Council.
