Monday, July 17, 1944
The regular meeting of the City Council was called to order at 7:50
P. M. by the Clerk.
v Councilmen present: Henrickson, Grable, Hawes, Bartlett.
Councilmen absent: Talbert.
Bartlett On motion by Henrickson seconded by Hawes, Councilman Bartlett was
mayor pro-tem
appointed mayor pro-tem.
t APPLICATIONS:
Wheel
-tax On motion by Hawes seconded by Henrickson, the application of Vincent
Puglies for wheel -tax license.was approved.
Liquor store On motion by.Henrickson seconded by Grable, the application of Ray L.
Dolan and A. L. Laubach to operate liquor store at 420 Ocean Avenue was
• approved.
Robi.Flindall- On motion by Grable seconded by Henrickson, the application of Robert
Ser.Sta.
Flindall for license to operate service station at 120 Ocean Avenue was
approved.
Geo.F.Carroll- On motion by Grable seconded by Hawes, the application of George F.
Feed store
M° Carroll for license to operate feed and fuel store at 209 - 5th Street
was approved.
Application The license application of Earl Powell to operate produce market on
held .over
east Ocean Avenue, Curry's Icecream building, was,held over for the reason
that it, appears, according to the Chief of Police, that no permission has
been given the applicant to use the building.
Mun.Tr.Park - The Clerk read a letter from City Engineer Overmyer requesting that

he be authorized to employ Ralph Presson, Classification '!B"110.00 per
month, effective as of July 6th and Norman Warner, Classification "B"
$110.00 per month, effective as of July 15th, at the municipal trailer
park and, on motion by Hawes seconded by Henrickson, the request was
granted.
Harry T.Gioves -Upon recommendation of the City Engineer and on motion by Grable
Street Dept.
seconded by Hawes, the City Engineer was authorized to employ Harry T.
Groves under Classification "D",.$175.00 per month, in the Street Dep-
artment, effective July 16, 1944.
17th St. Park The Clerk read a letter from Rev. Luther Arthur suggesting that the
V City allow someone to place a trailer on 17th Street park in return for
which the tenant would act as a caretaker of the buildings and property
at no further cost.to the dity and, on motion by Hawes seconded by Hen-
rickson, the matter.was referred to the Streets and Parks Committee and
City Attorney with authority to act.
o Garden Club Mr. Hudson, president of the Garden Club, asked the City Council to
. install additional light plugs in the Pav-A-Lon and run -a temporary wire

to the Huntington Beach Companye s building to be used at the Country
Fair and, on motion by Henrickson seconded by Grable, the City Engi-
neer was authorized to proceed with the work.
Demands On motion by Henrickson seconded by Grable, demands approved by ,
the Finance Committee were ordered paid.
Att'y Bush Special Attorney George Bush appeared before the City Council and _

explained why it is necessary for the Mayor and Clerk to sign a notice
in connection with M. N. Young and J. C. Aldrich and, on motion by
Henrickson seconded by Hawes', the.Mayor and Clerk were authorized to
execute same on behalf of the City.
Salary On motion by Henrickson seconded by Hawes, the City granted an increase

Salaries On motion by Henrickson seconded by Hawes, the following salary
increases were authorized as of July 1, 1944;
W. M. Clegg, building coordinator, increased from $25.00 to Class "B"
035.00 per month.
C. R, Furr, city controller, increased from $200.00 to Class "D",
$225:00 per month.
Harry A. Overmyer, city engineer, increased from $275.00 to Class "C"
$300.00 per month.
C.,P. Patton, deputy assessor, increased from $25.00 to Class "B" $35.00
per month.
Helen Axton, deputy clerk, increased from $150.00 to, Class "D", $160.00
per month.
Myrtle E. Herlinger, clerk and stenographer, increased from $150.00 to
Class "B", $160,00 per month.
Helen N. Newland, chief deputy clerk, increased from $190.00 to Class
"D" $190.00 per month.
Hazel Mollica, clerk Civilian Defense, increased from 65¢ per hour to
Class "D" 75� per hour.
J. C. Clark, sewage plant operator, increased from $195.00 to Class
"D", $210.00 per month.
E. R. Hensley, sweeper operator, increased from $170.00 to Class "D",
$180.00 per month.
P. L. Huddle, street foreman, increased from $235.00 to Class "E"
$250.00 per month.
A. H. Campbell, laborer, increased from $175.00 to Class "E", $185.00
per month.
C. H. Ellis, laborer, increased from $175.00 to Class "E", $185.00
per month.
Paul C. Wiman, laborer, increased from $175.00 to Class "E", $185.00
per month.
Ralph R. St. Clair, painter-; increased from $200.00 to Class "D"
$210.00 per month.
A. L. Umphenour, chief mechanic, increased from $195.00 to Class "D",
$$205.00 per month.
Delbert Higgins, chief life guard, salary $200.00 per month, to be
allowed overtime at the same rate during summer season.
Grover Barrows, janitor, salary $160.00 per month, to be allowed over-
time at the same rate but not,to exceed a total payment of $200.00
per month.
Homer. C. Dowty, utility man, increased from $$210.00 to Class "E" $$220.00 eA,
per month.

F. F. Oerebee, laborer, increased from $160.00 to Class "D" $175.00
per month.
Putt E. Grate, laborer, increased from $160.00 to Class "D" $175.00
per month.
C. H. Killian, trailer park caretaker, increased from $165.00 to Class
"D" $175.00 per month.
Joe Palladino, gardener, increased frorp $170.00 to Class "E" $180.00
per month.
Vernon E. Wentworth, laborer, increased from $160.00 to Class "D"
$175.00 per month.
James E. Whitesel, gardener, increased from $150.00 to Class "C" $160.00
per month, plus overtime for taking care of Lake Park Clubhouse not to
exceed $4o.00 per month.
Motion put and carried unanimously.
On ration by Hawes seconded by Henrickson, the Council adjourned.
