Monday, June 18, 1945
The regular meeting.of the City Council was called to order at
7:30 P. M. by the Clerk.
Councilmen present: Henrickson, Grable, Hawes, Bartlett.
Councilmen absent: Talbert. (Councilman Talbert arrived at 7:50 P.M.)
Henrickson -
�layor pro-tem On motion by Hawes seconded by Grable, Councilman Henrickson was
appointed mayor pro-tem.
APPLICATIONS: On motion by Bartlett seconded by Hawes, the application of Yankee-
�ircus
Patterson Circus to stage show on Block 303, June 21st, was approved.
veel Refrigeration On motion by Bartlett seconded by Hawes, the application of Neel
Refrigeration Service Company for license to install and service re-
frigeration was approved.
seo. Dever - On motion by Grable seconded by Bartlett, the application of George

Dever for license to engage in the business of general contractor was
approved.
play Tunstall - On motion by Hawes seconded by Bartlett, the application of Clay
trucking
Tunstall Trucking Company for trucking license was approved.

Hildebrand for license to conduct the business of public accountant
was approved.

Furr to cut curb for driveway on Magnolia Avenue between 6th and 7th
Streets was approved. •
John Wright & The Clerk read a letter from Chief Lifeguard D. G. Higgins asking
?red Cuff -
Lifeguards permission to employ John Wright as lifeguard at Surfside starting
June 15th and Fred Cuff as lifeguard starting June 19th, each at $125.00
per month, and on motion by Hawes seconded by Henrickson, permission was
granted.
Lifeguard equip. Chief Lifeguard D. G. Higgins recommended that the City Council

Sunset Beach sell to the County of Orange the lifeguard stations, can buoys, first
aid and other life saving equipment at Surfside and Sunset Beach so that
they can be covered by fire, damage or theft by County ordinance, and on
motion by Henrickson seconded by Hawes, the City Clerk and Mayor were
authorized to comply with the suggestion.

Hunt.State Co. There being no objections on file and none received verbally, on

granted permission to drill "State 2311.
Demands On motion by Bartlett seconded by Grable, demands approved by the
Finance Committee were ordered paid.
Flameproof The Clerk read a letter from Calairco Flameproofing Company offering
fabrics in
Bldgs. to flameproof fabrics in the Pav-A-Lon overhead and around the orchestra
pit for the sum of $340.00, and on motion by Hawes seconded by Grable, the
work was authorized.
On motion by Hawes seconded by Bartlett, the City Clerk was authorized
to secure price of flameproofing the curtains on the stage at Memorial
• Hall and to proceed with the work at a cost not to exceed $200.00.
y Sale of Tax This being the date set for sale at auction of certain

parcels of tax deeded property, the Mayor proceeded to offer same for sale
to the highest bidder.

in the amount of $540.00 for the same property. Also bid of J. K. McDonald
in the amount of $750.00 for the same property. Bids from the audience

erty was declared sold to Sam Clapp.
Portion of The Clerk read bid of Lyndon Wells in the amount of $165.00 for a

Frank Grebe On motion by Henrickson seconded by Hawes, the recommendations of City

So. Calif .Water The Clerk read a letter from the Southern California Water Company
Co. -contract
suggesting the continuation of a certain contract entered into between
the City and the water company as of February 17, 1941 and terminating
February 17, 1944. It is proposed that the above named contract be
continued until June 30, 19U. The matter was referred to the City
Attorney and City Council to consider and act upon at the next meeting.
Senate Bill #941 Chamber of Commerce Secretary Wm. H. Gallienne addressed the Council
relative to Senate Bill 941 authorizing purchase of certain beach front,
and on motion by Grable seconded by Hawes, the Clerk and Mayor were
authorized to send a telegram to the Governor urging his support to the
Bill. ,
Garden Club President of the Garden Club Hudson asked to have the platform on •
the beach moved to within 16 feet of the concrete steps and to have the
sand between the concrete steps and the platform covered for use of the
band, and on motion by Henrickson seconded by Bartlett, the request was
granted and referred to the engineer to proceed with the work.
Public Address Mr. Henry., caretaker of the Pav-A-Lon, informed the Council that the
system at Pav-A-Lon
public address system needs repairs, and on motion by Hawes seconded by
Grable, the matter was referred to the Beach and Pier Committee, with
power to have the work done.
kgreement - The Clerk read an agreement dated June 15, 1945, between the City

covering lease on a certain Tee"ofathe Municipal Pier from the 15th
day of June, 1945, to the 15th day of October, 1945, mental $30.00
per month, payable in advance, and on motion by Henrickson seconded by
Hawes, the Mayor and Clerk were authorized to execute the agreement.
Lgreement - The Clerk read Agreement dated June 18, 1945, between the City of

Huntington Beach and Thayne H. Long covering live bait concession on
the outer end of the pier for a period of three years beginning the l8th
day of June 1945, and ending on the 17th day of June, 1948, at a rental •
of $100.00 per year payable quarterly in advance, and on motion by Hawes
seconded by Bartlett, the Mayor and City Clerk were authorized to execute •
same.

This being the first reading no action was taken by the Council.

Bartlett, Resolution No. 967 was passed and adopted by the following vote:

-etirement The Clerk informed the Council that he had received a report from the
actuaries covering proposed employees' retirement fund. The matter was

Janitor for The City Council approved the employment of the following; R. M.
Pav-A-Lon
Henry, $10.00 per night for janitor service following dances at the
Pav-A-Lon. W. I. Rudd, 65¢ per hour as part time laborer on the golf
course; George S. Lockwood, 90¢ per hour as part time laborer at the
.golf course.
Fire Ins. The Clerk informed the Council that C. H. King was investigating

the matter of fire insurance covering the pier and had submitted a
• ' tentative estimate of $800.00 per year for fire insurance. The matter
was taken under advisement.
