Minutes - February 24, 1956 Special Meeting of City 'ouncil
The Mayor informed the dmtipcil that this meeting was
called .for the purpose of giving the first reading to Ordinance
Special Mtg.
643, an Ordinance for a Local Sales and Use Tax. -
called for
1st rdg. of
The City has been informed that it is possible that
,
ordinance
for Local
the County will adopt the Sales Tax Ordinance and it can act
Sales '& Use
Tax.
as late as Thursday of next week and -still have the effective
date of April 1; 1956. In order for the City to adopt the
ordinance and have the effective date April 1, 1956, the first
reading of the ordinance must be given tonight, February 24,
1956. If the City did not have the first reading of the Ordi-
nance tonight and the County did adopt the Sales Tax Ordinance
on or before next Thursday with the effective date of April lst,
then a 1% additional sales tax, or a total of 4% would be collected
in the City -of Huntington Beach by virtue of the CountyOrdinance
and that additional 1A, so collected, would entirely go to the
County.
However, if the City acts tonight with the first read-
ing and adopts the ordinance, making it effective -April 1st, and
the County also adopts the ordinance, then the additional 1% would
be refunded solely to the diyy of Huntington Beach.
In the event the City adopts this ordinance but the
County does not, then the Ordinance is of no force and effect
since it cannot become operative prior to the effective date of
the ordinance adopted by the County.
Although the City has been against a sales tax, if we do
not act and the County does, then there will be'imposed an additional
1% tax in theCCity and the City will get nothing from such tax.
The Clerk gave Ordinance No. 643, its first reading, and
ordinance of the City of Huntington Beach imposing a -City Sales and
Use Tax: Providing for the performance by the State Board of'Equa-
.lization of all functions incident to the administration, operation
and collection of the Sales and Use Tax hereby imposed and providing
penalties for violation thereof, by adding a new Article to the -
Huntington Beach Ordinance Code, Artie& 172, entitled "Sales and
Use Tax", by reading said ordinance in full.

ing of the City Council of the City of Huntington Beach adjourned.
