Minutes: On motion by Stang, and seconded by Davis, the minutes of the
Huntington Beach Planning Commission of Tuesday, July 15th, 1958, as tran-
scribed and mailed by the Secretary were accepted as mailed.
DIVISION OF LAND: DV 108 Located approximately 100 feet west of Highway
Applicant - Mrs. Kenneth Schmidt:
39 and on the south side of Glencoe Avenue;
legally described as Lot 2, Block B, Tract 522. The applicant requested the
following:lDivision I, legally described as the west 60 feet of Lot 2, Block B,
Tract 522; and Division II, legally described as the east 55 feet of Lot 2, Block
B, Tract 522.
A motion was made by Davis and seconded by Liles to recommend approval
with conditions.
ROLL CALL VOTE: AYES: Liles, Davis, Schryer, Bazil, Stang.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: Presson, Sork.
The motion carried.
USE VARIANCE: UV 126 The petition request was to allow the erection of
Applicant - Wilshire Oil Co.:
three tanks for the storage of petroleum products.
Two tanks: 90 feet in diameter, 48 feet in height
One tank: 60 feet in diameter, 48 feet in height. Located on the west side of
Newland Street opposite the intersection of Hamilton Street; and legally
described as the southerly 660 feet of the easterly 1759 feet of the northwest
quarter of Section 1, T.6.S., R.11.W., S B B & M, EXCEPTING a five acre parcel
of land surrounding that certain well known as 1,,fills No. 1.
The Secretary read the report and recommendations prior to opening
the hearing to the audience.
An engineering representative for the applicant addressed the Chairman
and explained the future proposed operation to the Commission.

The engineer was questioned by members of.the Co-m-Lission in regards to safety
precautions. He stated that the tank farm had sufficient fire fighting apparatus
to self contain possible fire or explosion, and that additional city fire fighting
equipment would not be required. It was further pointed out by the engineer that
the tank farm was 1320 feet away from Highway 39 (quarter of a mile) and would not
endanger traffic if a mishap were to occur. An explanation was also given of the
type of tanks which were used - a floating cover tank, which is considered an
important safety factor. Numerous other questions were asked the engineer regard-
ing the tank farm operation, which has already been properly fenced. There being
no further comment from the audience, the hearing was closed.
Upon completion of a Commission discussion of the case, a motion was
made by DAVIS and seconded bir LILES to RECO, I-EIND APPROVAL :1ITH THE FOLLOWING
CONDITION:
1. The tank farm in its entirety as described on submitted plot
plans shall be surrounded by an earthen dike or equivalent dike
designed and engineered to contain 100o capacity of all tank
containers therein.

C0I11DITI02TAL PERMIT: : CP 106
Applicant - Southern California Edison Co.
An informal discussion was heard on the sub.ect, however, due to the
intervention of Secretary's vacation, the proper legal notice was not mailed in
sufficient time. The first official hearing for the Conditional Permit was set
for Tuesday, August 19th, 1958.
AIP Membership ivies: The Secretary requested approval for membership dues of
$16.00 annually to join the American Institute of Planners, which is one of the
two major planning organizations in the country. The Institute, it was explained,
mails out a good deal of useful education and information on current planning
problems. It is an important means for keening abreast of the latest techniques.
A motion was made by Davis and seconded by Stan; to recommend approval
of the AIP membership dues of $16.00 annually to be charged to the subscription
account.
The motion carried.
