AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH
AD,MNDING AND ADDING NEW SECTIONS TO ORDINANCE
NO. 381 OF THE CITY OF HUIT T INGTON BEACH, EN_

The City Council of the City of Huntington Beach, a,
California, does ordain as follo -s:
Section 1: That Section 4 of Ordinance No. 381 ,
entitled: "AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH ,
a
CALIFORNIA, RELATING TO AND REGULATING SIGNS OVER SIDE-
WALKS W',ITHIN THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH" , is hereby
amended., the same to read as follows:
Section 4: SPECIFICATIONS:
Specifications for an electric sign shall be as follows:
a. Wiring shall conform to the electrical ordinance
of the City of Huntington Beach.
b. Signs must be constructed entirely of, metal or
other approved non-combustible material, except that good
may be used on the inside if kept at least two inches front the .
nearest lanp socket. In cases of ornamental scroll work or
similar design, there impracticable to support wires as a clove
provided, they may be separated from such metal by a section .
of porcelain or ,glass not less than one-eighth (1/8) inch in
thickness.
c. Signs must be braced by angle iron of such
thickness and so placed as to secure sufficient strength and
rigidity.
d. All metal must be galvanized or enameled, or
treated with at least three coats of anti-corrosive paint or z ti

s. Bottom of sign must have at least one-quarter (�)
inch drainage hole for each square foot of its surface.
f. Signs must have the maker' s name or trademark
permanently attached to the exterior.
Specifications for vertical wall signs shall be as follows:
No wall sign having its advertising surface in a verti-
cal position, or any portion thereof, shall extend or project
over any public sidewalk, street, alley or other public property,
more tcian is shov,rn in the following table, for the distance the
base thereof shall be above the sidewalk, street , alley or
public property adjoining the building , directly under the
sign:
a. Below a height of eight ,(8) feet , not to exceed
twelve (12) inches from the property line.
b. Above a height of eight (8) feet and below a
height of twelve (12) feet , not to exceed twenty-four (24)
inches from the property line.
c. Above a height of twelve (12) feet, not more than
three (3) feet from face of building, and may be erected to
any length aesirea up to twenty (20) feet.
Section 2: That a new section shall be added to Ordinance
lNo. 381 of the City of Huntington Beach, to be known as Section
4a and to be inserted immediately after Section 4, which said
new Section 4a shall read as follows:
Section 4a: Specifications for horizontal wall signs shall be
as follows:

where the proposed sign will not obstruct the view of existing
signs, nor shall any electric sign extend beyond the line of the
curb.
Specifications for construction of wall signs shall be
as follows:
All signs, electrical or otherwise, must be constructed
of metal or other non-combustible material, and when such signs
are attached to the exterior walls of buildings, cons trusted ,of
masonry, concrete or stone, shall be fastened with galvanized

expansion bolts at least one-half (0 inch by three end one-half

the purpose of using nails or screws in attaching the sign. All
fastening irons shall be galvanized and shall be attached to the
wall by at least two (2) galvanized expansion bolts, not less
than eight (8) inches apart.
All connection_s on vertical wall signs above roof line
shall be made to bolts through wall. All bolts shall be galvan-
ized and not 'le ss than one-half (z) inch in dimeter; provided,
ho:=rever, if the wall is of reinforced concrete construction, a
one-half (.1) inch by three and one-half (3a) inch galvanized expan-
sion bolt will be permitted.
Every wall sign, including supports, braces and
anchorage, shall be designed, constructed and maintained to with-
stand a wind pressure from every direction, as provided by Section
2307 of the Uniform Building Code, as adopted by Ordinance ' o.
375 of the City of Huntington Beach.
Cables, chains , 'wires or other flexible or loosely con-
nected members shall not be considered as -,Droviding lateral brac-
ing unless provision is made by a turn-buckle, or other equally
\ effective method or devise , for tightening and keeping-; taut such
member.

All structural members and other connections shall be
securely riveted or bolted together, and no rivet or bolt exposed
to the Breather shall be less than one-half (12) inch in diameter.
Section 3: That a new section shall be added to
Ordinance No. 381 of the City of Huntington Beach, to be known
as Section 4b and to be inserted immediately after Section 4a,
which said new Seetion' 4b shall read as follows:
Section 4b: Specifications for placing and erecting street clocks
shall be as follows:
The owner, proprietor or manager of any building or
place of business in the City of Huntington Beach , after special
permission is secured from the City Council, as in this Ordinance
provided, in addition .to the building permit, may erect, place or
maintain upon the public sidewalk in front of such building or place
of business a street clock not less than thirty (30) inches in dia-
meter or more than for, (40) inches in diameter, supported upon
a oost of ornamental design, the total height of Wnich shall "be
no less than fifteen (15) feet or more than twenty (20) feet.
No portion of such post sup--Porting the clock shall be more than
two (2) feet from the outer ed�,ge of the curb and shall be at least
twenty (20) feet from the -point of the intersection of the lines of
any street , measured oarallel with the street.
x clock may be supported on the corner of any building at
the intersection of streets , if t��le lowest portion thereof is not
less than fifteen (15) feet or more than twenty ( 20) feet , above the
sidewalk and does not oro j ect from any face or wall of the building,
in any .direction, more than five (5)' feet.
The only advertising matter to be displayed upon such
clock shall be the name of the ol,Trner, proprietor or manager of the
place of business erecting and maintaining such clock.

Section 4: The City Clerk shall certify to the passage
and adoption of this Ordinance and shall cause it to be published
in the Huntington beach News, a meekly newspaper of general circu-
lation, i
lation, >>rint;ed and -published in said City of Huntington peach,
and this Ordinance shall be in effect ten (10) days from and
after its passage and adoption.
Passed and adopted by the City Council of the City of
Huntington Beach at a regular, adjourned meeting of said City
Council held on the day ofG-Y' , 1938.
