ORDINANCE No. 1363
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
HUNTINGTON BEACH RELATING TO SIGNS; AMENDING
THE HUNTINGTON BEACH ORDINANCE CODE BY AMENDING
SECTIONS 8693 and 8693 (1 ) THEREOF-
The city council of the City of Huntington Beach does or-
dain as follows :
Section 1. That Sections 8693, and 8693(1) of the Hunting-
ton Beach Ordinance Code arehereby amended, and as amended,
shall read In words and figures as follows:
Section 8693 Signs In All Districts. Notwithstanding the
provisions of Chapterg 92, 94 and 95 of the
Huntington Beach Ordinance Code, temporary subdivisidnal signs
shall be permitted In all districts, as defined and established
pursuant to Chapters 92 and 94 of the Huntington Beach Ordinance
Code, except that no temporary subdivision directional sign
shall be erected in any residential zone or within 50' of any
residence or any residential zone except a temporary subdivision
directional sign may be erected within a new subdivision until
the homes are sold or for a period of one year whichever is
shorter. Any temporary subdivision directional sign shall be
subject to the following restrictions:
(a ) Size of Signs : Such signs shall not be more than 40 feet
in horizonts leng-th nor more than 15 feet in vertical height,
exclusive of ground clearance, and shall not exceed a total area
of 400 square feet.
(b) Location of Signs: Such signs may be established along9but
not wTEH1n--,-fF3rig of way of any highway, street or thorough-
fare except such signs may not be 'established within 500 feet of
a freeway or be designed to be viewed from freeways which are
designated as freeway routes by the Division of Highways of the
State of California, and such signs shall conform to front yard
lines or building lines.
(c) Number of Signs : For the purpose of this Article, a sign
commonly known as a IV' sign shall be deemed to be such number
of signs as there are plane surfaces thereof containing message
material Intended to be read by the public. A sign containing
two surfaces supported by common structural members shall be
considered one sign.

(d) Time Limit: Each permit for a directional sign shall be
valid-T-3-r--no-7—more than one (1) year from the date of issuance
provided, however, that the Building and Safety Director may
upon application, renew the permit for not to exceed three (3)
successive period of one year each.
(e) Structural Members : Any portion of a wooden sign support
or brace which is e ow the ground level and within two feet
above the ground shall be treated with an approved preservative.
(f) inspections: During the construction of each directional
sign, tF9 Bui cTfng and Safety Director shall inspect the founda-
tion excavation or post holes and the supporting members prior to
their placement in the ground.
(9) Additions to Si n: There shall be no additions, tag signs,
streamers, devices, ri—seoplay boards of appurtenances added to the
sign as originally approved or which cause the sign to exceed
the dimensions or area herein specified.
(h) Removal for Highway Widening.* Any directional sign shall be
rbitoveZI by the person to whom the permit was issued and by the
owner of the land upon which the sign is located, without expense
to any public agency, when it conflicts with any street or highway
widening, or construction, upon written notice by mail addressed
to the last known address of the owner of the land upon which the
sign is situated and a like notice to the person to whom the per-
mit was issued that the public agency requires such removal. A
copy of said writteh notice shall be filed with the Building &
Safety Director concurrently with notification to said person and
owner.
(i) Ground Clearance: An unobstructed open space, except for
supports of the sign, shall be maintained to a height of ten
(10) feet from the abutting street grade, or the average grade
of any street intersection within 150 feet of the sign.
U ) Si Relocation: Upon the written approval of the Building
and 'Safety Director-, a directional sign for which a permit is
currently effective may be removed and relocated, provided the
original site is restored to its original condition and provided
a new permit is applied for and issued, the fee paid and the
bond executed. The new permit shall have the same expiration
date as the original permit and upon the issuance of t'he new per-
mit, the cash bond posted for the original permit shall be return-
ed.
(k) Sign Identification; The Building and Safety Director shall

cause to be affixed to, and the sign owner shall maintain in a
readily visible location on the sign for the duration of the sign,

his assigned permit number, the expiration date of the per-
mit, the name of the owner of the land, and the name of the
owner of the sign, together with such other data as he may
deem necessary to properly carry out the functions of his office
in the issuance of the permit and enforcement of these provis-
ions.
(1) Enforcement and Appeal: The Building and Safety Director
shall-7-e response ble for the enforcement of these provisions and
any aggrieved party may appeal, in writing, any decision or ruling
of the said Director within 5 days from the approval of the per-
mit or prior to the commencement of construction of the sign,
whichever is later. The 'Director shall not issue a permit until
the expiration of the 5 day period. The Planning Commission
may sustain, modify or over rule any decision or ruling appealed
from.
(m) Existing Signs: Any existing temporary directional sign
which-7-s-la-wruily established on the effective date of this or-
dinance may remain until the expiration of its present permit*
Such permit may be renewed as herein provided.
Section 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the passage
and adoption of this ordinance and shall cause the same to be
published by one insertion in the Huntington-- Beach News, a week-
ly newspaper printed, published and circulated in the City of
Huntington Beach, California, and thirty (30) days after the
adoption thereof, the same shall take effect and be in force,
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of
Huntington Beach at a regular meeting held on the day of
1967-
