AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH
AMENDING THE HUNTINGTON BEACH ORDINANCE CODE
BY AMENDING SECTIONS 9332, 9430. 5 AND 9700. 8
TO INCLUDE PROVISIONS FOR HEALTH CENTERS AND
HEALTH CLUBS
The City Council of the City of Huntington Beach does
ordain as follows :
SECTION 1. The Huntington Beach Ordinance Code is hereby
amended by amending Sections 9332, 9430. 5 and 9700. 8 to read
as follows :
9332. UNCLASSIFIED USES SUBJECT TO A CONDITIONAL USE
PERMIT. A conditional use permit may be granted in all dis-
tricts except residential, Al, SP-1 and Sl for the following
unclassified uses :
(a) Public and quasi public uses such as private clubs
or lodges , rest homes , sanatoriums , convalescent hospitals and
hospitals.
(b) Airports (general aviation stage one) .
(c ) Heliports.
(c) Heliports.
(d) Amusement enterprises .
(e) Transportation terminals.
(f) Commercial recreation uses and/or centers excluding
golf courses .
(g) Golf driving range.
(h) Kennels , animal hospitals or clinics .
(i) Miniature golf courses .
(j ) Museums .
(k) Open air and/or drive-in theaters .
(1) Commercial horse stables pursuant to all provisions of

Articles 938 and 939.
(m) Radio or television transmitters.
(n) Recreational vehicle parks, subject to locational
criteria as adopted by resolution of the City Council.
(o) Post offices.
(p) Health centers and health clubs (over 2500 square feet )
subject to the following:
(1) If the facility includes the installation of
handball, racquet, or tennis courts , the parking requirement
shall be four (4) spaces for each court plus any additional
parking spaces deemed necessary by the Planning Commission
for floor area not calculated as court area.
(2) If the facility does not include the installation
of handball, racquet, or tennis courts , the parking require-
ment shall be one (1) space for each two hundred (200 ) feet
of gross floor area.
9430. 5. The following services shall be permitted:
A. Animal clinics (no outside kennel runs or overnight
care shall be permitted)
Animal grooming
Automobile minor repair (refer to Section 9730. 29)
B. Banks
Blueprinting and photostating
Bowling alleys , billiards , poolhalls
C. Cafes and restaurants
Catering establishments
D. Dry cleaning establishments using no more than two
(2) clothes cleaning units , none of which shall have
a rated capacity in excess of forty ( 40) pounds , using
cleaning fluid which is nonexplosive and noninflammable
at a temperature below 130 degrees Fahrenheit
E. Electric distribution, substations
H. Health centers and health clubs (under 2500 square feet)
M. Medical and dental laboratories
Movie theaters
Music conservatories

P. Public garages
S. Saving and loan associations
Skating rinks , ice or roller
9700. 8 . Words beginning with the letter "H" shall have
the following definitions :
(1) Health Centers and Health Clubs (under 2500 square
feet) . A health center or health club shall mean a commercial or
private establishment for the purpose of recreation and/or
physical fitness activities such as handball, racquet or tennis
courts, or exercise/conditioning facilities including weight
training, dance exercises , or other such uses .
(2) Hotel. A building or portion thereof, containing six
(6) or more guest rooms designed, arranged, intended to be used,
let or hired out to be occupied, whether the compensation for
hire be paid directly' or indirectly in money, goods , wares,
merchandise, labor or otherwise , and in which no provision is
made for cooking in any individual guest room or suite, but is
used as the more or less temporary abode of individuals .
SECTION 2. This ordinance shall take effect thirty days
after its adoption. The City Clerk shall certify to the passage
of this ordinance and cause same to be published within fifteen
days after adoption in the Huntington Beach Independent, a news-
paper of general circulation.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of
Huntington Beach at a regular meeting thereof held on the 21st
day of May 1979.

that the foregoing ordinance was read to said City Council at a regular
meeting thereof held on the 7th day of May
19 79 , and was again read to said City Council at a regular
meeting thereof held on the 21st day of May 19 79 and
was passed and adopted by the affirmative vote of more than a majority of
all the members of said City Council.
