HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council - 1467 RESOLUTION No. 1467 A RESOLUTION OF ThE CITY 'COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH FAVORING AC- QUISITION OF FEDERAL SURPLUS PROPERTY BY MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT The City Council of the City of Huntington Beach do resolve as follows: WHEREAS, the Federal government now possesses, and will continue to acquire considerable quantities of property no longer needed for their original governmental purposes; and WHEREAS, much of this property, declared surplus is stored and ultimately sold through the offices of the Gener- al Services Administration; and �{ REAS, certain rights and privileges to the acquisition of this surplus property are accorded to nonprofit organiza- tions and to school jurisdictions; and hTHEREAS9 the rights and privileges of cities to acquire CD such surplus property are severely restricted and are gen- erally limited to purposes of civil defense; and WHEREAS, such surplus property is purchased by private individuals for speculative purposes; and WHMEAS, in effect' municipal jurisdictions do not have the same rights and privileges now enjoyed by school dis- l� Res. No. 1467 tricts and by certain nonprofit groups ; and WHEREAS, such surplus property has been purchased with public funds and paid for by the taxpayers; and WHEREAS, it is generally deemed equitable that munici- pal governments should enjoy the same rights and privileges insofar as surplus property is concerned, now accorded to school districts and to nonprofit organizations; and NOW T1 EREFOREI BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Huntington Beach that the City of Huntington Beach respectfully memorializes the President and Congress of the United States to take appropriate administrative and legislative action which will grant to municipal govern- ments the same rights and privileges now granted to school districts and other nonprofit organizations with respect to the acquisition of federal surplus property; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk of the City of Huntington Beach is directed to transmit copies of this resolution to the Senators and Congressmen, in the Congress- of the United States7 representing this district and to any other interested person.
