WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Huntington Beach has consistently expressed its opposition to the coastal freeway route adopted by the California Highway Com- mission on May 22nd, 1963; and WHEREAS, the City Council has attempted to work with all interested public agencies in order to develop an accept- able compromise route; and WHEREAS, the City Council has learned that a possibili- ty exists that the California Highway Commission may restudy the issue of the location of the coastal freeway route; and WHEREAS, Assemblyman Robert E. Badham has provided leadership in attempting to develop a compromise route; and VFHEREAS, as a result of the effort to develop a com- promise route, an altern4te freeway corridor has evolved which would change the freeway route to a location entirely within the City of Newport Beach and unincorporated territory; and WHEREAS, said freeway corridor has been referred to as the Newport Beach Inland Corridor; and WHEREAS, after careful consideration of the proposed Newport Beach Inland Corridor, it is the opinion of the City 1. Res. No.2207 Council that said proposal would provide a workable alterna- tive to the adopted coastal freeway route and would better serve the interests of the general public; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Huntington Beach strongly urges a restudy of the freeway location on the basis of the tremendous increase in the cost of the land and also on the State Engineering Department's estimates that the users would benefit by $1,350,000 annually and that the freeway could be constructed for $8,000,000 less. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Huntington Beach that the City would accept the Newport Beach Inland Corridor as a more favorable route than the adopted coastal freeway alignment, subject to favor- able engineering studies and refinement.
