A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
HUNTINGTON BEACH URGING HIGH PRIORITY ON THE
IMPROVEMENT OF PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY BETWEEN
HIGHWAY 39 AND THE SANTA ANA RIVER
WHEREAS, Pacific Coast Highway between Highway 39 (Beach
Boulevard) and the Santa Ana River is one of the most dangerous
and accident-prone stretches of highway in California; and
The dangerous condition is intensified by surfers , bathers
and beach visitors crossing Pacific Coast Highway to gain access
to the beach; and
Congested parking along both sides of the highway impairs
vision and causes vehicles to pull out into the traffic lane under
dangerous circumstances ; and
Several head-on collisions have resulted during the past
year with major destruction, death and critical injuries , and
many accidents to life, limb and property have occurred in that
area; and
The citizens of Huntington Beach are vitally concerned about
'the dangers posed by this dangerous portion of highway, however,
the present priority of federal funding and finances does not
permit improvement of this stretch of highway for several years,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
City of Huntington Beach that Pacific Coast Highway between
Highway 39 and the Santa Ana River be designated as a high
priority project for improvement in order to eliminate the
dangerous condition that presently exists, and that this resolution
be presented to the California Department of Transportation urging
prompt action on reevaluation priorities to permit construction to
commence on this project.
