A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
HUNTINGTON BEACH URGING THE STATE LEGISLATURE TO
ADOPT AN EMERGENCY MEASURE TO REQUIRE RETAIL
FOOD STORES TO INDICATE PRICES OF COMMODITIES
ON INDIVIDUAL PACKAGES
WHEREAS , state legislation which required grocery stores
to display the prices of commodities clearly on individual
packages expired December 31 , 1979; and
This requirement protected the consumer by providing a yard-
stick whereby the consumer could shop comparatively; and
Where items are not individually marked, the consumer has no
assurance that the price quoted is , in fact , proper and in line
with current costs ; and
Inasmuch as the householder spends one-third of his budget
on food, in these days of rampant inflation it is doubly important
that the consumer is not subjected to arbitrary pricing practices ,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
City of Huntington Beach that it does strongly urge the state
Legislature to adopt an urgency measure to require retail food
stores to indicate prices of specific commodities on all in-
dividual packages .
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is directed to
furnish copies of this resolution to appropriate representatives
in the Legislature , the Orange County Board of Supervisors ,
and the Department of Consumer Affairs .
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of
Huntington Beach at a regular meeting thereof held on the 4th
day of February 1980.
