HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council - 5007 RESOLUTION N0. 5007 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH SUPPORTING RATIFICATION OF THE PERIPHERAL CANAL REFERENDUM WHEREAS, the increasing possibility of serious water short- ages within the next decade is a source of continuing concern to all residents and businesses in Southern California; and The Peripheral Canal would assure a stabilized quality of water not now enjoyed by state water project contractors and permit Southern California water utilities to commit funds to wastewater reclamation, thereby reducing both long-term demands for water and providing insurance against the effects of drought; and The Supreme Court has ruled that by 1985 Southern California' s Colorado River water supply will be cut in half, and much concern has been expressed over the delay in beginning the canal project; and Such Peripheral Canal Project will take many years to com- plete and continued deferral of such project inhibits the orderly development and growth of business and industry throughout Southern California and is, therefore, vital to the state' s economy, NOW, THEREFORE, the City council of the City of Huntington Beach does hereby resolve that the Governor is urged to place the Peripheral Canal Referendum on the earliest possible statewide ballot for approval by the electorate. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Council strongly supports such measure and urges the residents of this city to join such support. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is directed to send copies of this resolution to Governor Brown, the appropriate /ahb 6/8/81 1. l egislators, the League of California Cities, and Boards of Supervisors of Los Angeles , Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura Counties.
