A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF HUNTINGTON BEACH SUPPORTING RATIFICATION
OF THE PERIPHERAL CANAL REFERENDUM
WHEREAS, the increasing possibility of serious water short-
ages within the next decade is a source of continuing concern to
all residents and businesses in Southern California; and
The Peripheral Canal would assure a stabilized quality of
water not now enjoyed by state water project contractors and
permit Southern California water utilities to commit funds to
wastewater reclamation, thereby reducing both long-term demands
for water and providing insurance against the effects of drought;
and
The Supreme Court has ruled that by 1985 Southern California' s
Colorado River water supply will be cut in half, and much concern
has been expressed over the delay in beginning the canal project;
and
Such Peripheral Canal Project will take many years to com-
plete and continued deferral of such project inhibits the orderly
development and growth of business and industry throughout Southern
California and is, therefore, vital to the state' s economy,
NOW, THEREFORE, the City council of the City of Huntington
Beach does hereby resolve that the Governor is urged to place
the Peripheral Canal Referendum on the earliest possible statewide
ballot for approval by the electorate.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Council strongly supports
such measure and urges the residents of this city to join such
support.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is directed to
send copies of this resolution to Governor Brown, the appropriate
