A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
HUNTINGTON BEACH URGING THE ORANGE COUNTY
TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION TO COMPLETE ROUTE 57
FREEWAY CORRIDOR BETWEEN THE SANTA ANA AND SAN
DIEGO FREEWAYS
WHEREAS, a good transportation system is vital to the economy
of Orange County and its residents ; and
Employment opportunities and the availability of housing con-
venient to employment for Orange County residents depends on
good transportation systems ; and
The gap on Route 57 between the Santa Ana and San Diego
Freeways represents a major breakdown in the north/south traffic
flow through the high-density population center of Orange County;
and
Closure of the Route 57 gap would handle 50 percent of the
anticipated north/south freeway traffic in Orange County; and
Route 57 will provide access for employment, recreation,
education and shopping opportunities for approximately 300,000
persons in the southwest area, and approximately 600,000 persons
in the north and central areas of Orange County; and
At least 900,000 persons, or 45 percent of Orange County' s
present population, will benefit directly by the completion of
Route 57, and it is estimated that another 800,000 persons will
benefit indirectly through the alleviation of traffic on other
freeways ,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
City of Huntington Beach that it does hereby urge the Orange
County Transportation Commission to include the closure of
Route 57 gap on its list as a primary high-priority project to
be completed by 1990.
