HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council - 5239 RESOLUTION NO. 5239 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH URGING THE ORANGE COUNTY TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION TO COMPLETE ROUTE 57 FREEWAY CORRIDOR BETWEEN THE SANTA ANA AND SAN DIEGO FREEWAYS WHEREAS, a good transportation system is vital to the economy of Orange County and its residents ; and Employment opportunities and the availability of housing con- venient to employment for Orange County residents depends on good transportation systems ; and The gap on Route 57 between the Santa Ana and San Diego Freeways represents a major breakdown in the north/south traffic flow through the high-density population center of Orange County; and Closure of the Route 57 gap would handle 50 percent of the anticipated north/south freeway traffic in Orange County; and Route 57 will provide access for employment, recreation, education and shopping opportunities for approximately 300,000 persons in the southwest area, and approximately 600,000 persons in the north and central areas of Orange County; and At least 900,000 persons, or 45 percent of Orange County' s present population, will benefit directly by the completion of Route 57, and it is estimated that another 800,000 persons will benefit indirectly through the alleviation of traffic on other freeways , NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Huntington Beach that it does hereby urge the Orange County Transportation Commission to include the closure of Route 57 gap on its list as a primary high-priority project to be completed by 1990. ahb 2/10/83 1. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Orange County Transportation Commission is also requested during fiscal year 1982-1983 to initiate a Route 57 alignment and financial study as a prerequi- site to future construction.
