A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
HUNTINGTON BEACH URGING THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE
OF CALIFORNIA TO INITIATE A COMPREHENSIVE STATE-
WIDE STUDY AND PROGRAM TO RESOLVE BEACH EROSION
PROBLEMS
WHEREAS, the beaches and coastal resources of the State of
California are a vital part of the total environment and economy
of the state as a whole; and
In recent years the increasing destruction of coastal re-
sources by severe storms and high tides, together with pre-
dictions that such events are likely to recur annually over the
next twenty to thirty years , confirms the urgent need for state-

wide action to preserve and protect our beaches and related
coastal resources , both public and private ; and
It appears that any long-term, permanent solution will
have to be accomplished through a regional study followed by
a management
g program involving the Federal, state and local
governments, as well as private property owners ; and
The San Diego County Association of Governments has initiated
a study to develop ways and means of dealing with beach erosion
in San Diego County on a long-term, permanent basis ; and
The Huntington Beach City Council feels that a similar pro-
gram can and should be developed for the entire state involving
the efforts and resources of all affected parties; and
Under the mandate of Proposition 20, approved by the voters
in 1972, protection of the coast was determined a matter of
statewide concern, and the California Coastal Commission should
be directed to make greater efforts to preserve coastal resources
from further destruction by massive storm damage,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the

City of Huntington Beach does hereby urge the Governor of the
State of California to initiate, coordinate and provide leader—
ship toward developing a long—term, permanent, comprehensive
statewide program to preserve and protect the beaches , harbors
and other coastal resources of the state for the future benefit
and enjoyment of the state' s residents as well as the tourist
trade.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be
sent to the Governor of the State of California, and appropriate
representatives in the Congress and state Legislature.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of
Huntington Beach at a regular meeting thereof held on the 18th
day of April , 19 83.

that the foregoing resolution was passed and adopted by the affirmative
vote of more than a majority of all the members of said City Council
at a regular meeting thereof held on the 18th day
