HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council - 5257 RESOLUTION NO. 5257 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH OPPOSING THE POSITION OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE OF CITIES ON S. 66 WHEREAS, S. 66 has been introduced in the Senate of the United States ; and S . 66 regulates the franchise relationship between a city and any cable television operator providing cable television in the city; and S. 66 will prevent cities from enforcing certain provisions of existing cable franchises or from effectively regulating new cable franchises ; and S . 66 would permit a cable operator to operate a monoply without control over the rates that may be charged to customers of the cable operator; and The National League of Cities has agreed with the National Cable Television Association to support S. 66; and The National League of Cities failed to obtain any input from its members before agreeing to support S. 66, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Huntington Beach that it opposes S. 66 because it is an intrusion by the Federal government into the local affairs of cities and it will permit cable operators to operate a monoply without regulation of rates to customers . BE .IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the League of California Cities is requested to oppose S. 66 and the Agreement for Compromise supporting S . 66 by the National League of Cities and the National Cable Television Association.
