A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
HUNTINGTON BEACH REQUESTING THE TALBERT CHANNEL
OCEAN OUTLET REMAIN DIRECTLY ADJACENT TO THE
SANTA ANA RIVER MOUTH WHEN RIVER IS WIDENED BY
THE SANTA ANA RIVER FLOOD CONTROL PROJECT
WHEREAS, the Corps of Engineers is studying the Santa Ana
River Flood Control Project to widen and improve the Santa Ana
River; and
The Corps of Engineers ' recommended plan is to retain the
Talbert Channel ocean outlet directly adjacent to the Santa Ana
River when the mouth of the river is widened; and
The County of Orange Environmental Management Agency has
asked the Corps of Engineers to consider relocation of the Talbert
Channel ocean outlet closer to Brookhurst Street ; and
Such relocation would cause loss of substantial beach rec-
reation area; would reduce the size of the wetland area parallel
to the channel currently available to accommodate channel over-
flow; would present larger environmental obstacles; and be far
more costly than the Corps of Engineers ' recommended plan,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
City of Huntington Beach that it hereby requests the Corps of
Engineers to design the Santa Ana River Flood Control Project so
that the Talbert Channel ocean outlet remains directly adjacent
to the Santa Ana River mouth to minimize impacts on Huntington
State Beach.
