HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council - 6473 RESOLUTION NO. 6473 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH CONDEMNING HATE CRIMES AND COMMENDING EFFORTS OF THE HUNTINGTON BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT IN ITS EFFORT TO COMBAT HATE CRIMES WHEREAS, on January 9, 1993, a Vietnamese-American man was attacked and badly injured in Laguna Beach and the police believe that this violent attack on a beach frequented by Gay and Lesbian people was a "hate crime" ; and Last year, Orange County documented over 100 hate-related incidents; and Men and women, Jews and Arabs, Gays and Lesbians, African-Americans and Latinos, Vietnamese and Koreans, Japanese and Chinese, recent immigrants and long-term residents have been the object of hate motivated by the ignorance of their attackers; and We stand united as a county of civilized people in condemning such acts of ignorance and senseless violence directed against one of us and thereby all of us, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Huntington Beach does hereby condemn this odious attack on January 9 , 1993, and all other hate crimes and incidents in our community as unacceptable behavior in this great country. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Huntington Beach hereby commends the efforts of its law enforcement staff for its ongoing effort to combat hate crimes through its networking efforts with Orange County agencies, - 1 - other local cities, school districts and community organizations . PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Huntington Beach at a regular meeting thereof held on the 15th day of March 1993 .
