A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH APPROVING A GENERAL PUBLIC
PASSENGER BOAT SERVICE BETWEEN HUNTINGTON BEACH,
AT PETER'S LANDING, AND CATALINA ISLAND
WHEREAS, Huntington Beach is a coastal community of approximately ]80.000
residents, with eight miles of coastline facing the Pacific Ocean and Santa Catalina Island;
and
Many of the residents of Huntington Beach and its visitors have an interest in
occasionally going to Catalina Island, and some would enjoy the opportunity to experience
Southern California sailing at its best as part of this journey; and
Currently there is no vessel passenger service between Huntington Beach and Santa
Catalina Island; and
Residents of Huntington Beach who want to go by passenger vessel to Catalina
Island now have an additional 40 minutes of round trip travel to the Long Beach terminals
and up to 50 minutes additional round trip travel time to the Newport Beach terminal, and
many of these trips could be taken off the area highways if there were vessel service to
Catalina Island directly from Huntington Beach; and
None of the existing carriers to and from Catalina Island provide an opportunity for
passengers to enjoy sailing as part of their services; and
Peter's Landing Marina in Huntington Beach has been approved by the California
Coastal Commission as a point of embarkation to Catalina Island for the general public; and
Providing regular vessel passenger service to Catalina Island from Huntington Beach
would be of benefit to local businesses in Huntington Beach, including food, lodging and
travel service companies; and
Providing a vessel passenger service which includes a sailing experience like the
service proposed by Sail Catalina, Inc. responds to an opportunity for travelers to enjoy the
generally moderate westerly winds which are present most afternoons in the Catalina
l

Channel and which create one of the world's most exciting downwind sailing experiences;
and
Sail Catalina, Inc. has made application to the California Public Utilities Commission
for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity to provide regularly scheduled vessel
passenger service between Huntington Beach and Catalina Island which will include sailing
back to the Mainland as the distinctive feature of the proposed service.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Huntington Beach that the establishment of a common carrier passenger vessel service
between Peter's Landing Marina in Huntington Beach and Santa Catalina Island will be of
broad public benefit to residents and businesses in the area and will provide a more
convenient embarkation point to Santa Catalina Island for travelers from our immediate
area than the existing service terminals.
Be it further resolved that the California Public Utilities Commission favorably
receive and approve the application From Sail Catalina, Inc. to operate its proposed
passengers vessel service between Peter's Landing Marina in Huntington Beach and Santa
Catalina Island.
