HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council - 6614 RESOLUTION NO. 6614 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH SUPPORTING THE DISNEY CLASSIC WEEK CONCEPT AND THE EFFORTS OF THE SPONSORS TO CONVINCE DIVISION I COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTS TO SUPPORT THE EVENT WHEREAS, the Walt Disney Company, the Los Angeles Times and ABC Television have proposed to co-sponsor a "Disney Classic Week" that would take place each January in Orange County; and The City Council of the City of Huntington Beach supports the establishment of "The Disney Classic" program and recognizes the positive impact such an event would bring to the City of Huntington Beach and the county of Orange; and The City of Huntington Beach acknowledges the goals of"The Disney Classic" in its effort to salute "excellence" in our university system by staging a program of academics, arts and athletics, and encourages support for the event; and Chapman University estimates that the Disney Classic Week activities could generate a minimum of $125 million to the Orange County economy as well as national exposure of our abundant vacation amenities; and The week would conclude with a national collegiate football championship game between the top seeded college football teams in the country; and The Disney Classic Week would celebrate university excellence in academics, the arts and athletics among the nation's 106 Division I colleges and universities; and The Disney Classic Week also represents an opportunity to showcase Orange County and its many arts venues and attractions through coverage by the national media that would be generated by such an event; and The City of Huntington Beach recognizes the importance of higher education to the well-being of our nation, and believe that"The Disney Classic" is an excellent way 1 7/Disneyreso to recognize those young university men and women throughout our nation, for their pursuit of excellence through education; and Hosting an event of this scope throughout Orange County would serve as a catalyst in having all 31 Orange County cities come together to celebrate the goal of The Disney Classic, an idea that the City of Huntington Beach applauds; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Huntington Beach that the City of Huntington Beach acknowledges and supports the establishment of "The Disney Classic" and calls on Orange County cities and businesses to do likewise. This Resolution shall take effect from and after the date of its passage and adoption.
