HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council - 6667 RESOLUTION NO. 6667 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH TO AMEND THE CITY CLASSIFICATION PLAN BY ADDING ANEW CLASSIFICATION ENTITLED "PUBLIC INFORMATION SPECIALIST" WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to amend the City Classification Plan; and The provisions of Personnel Rule 12-4 have been complied with, according to the official minutes of the Personnel Commission on file with the Commission secretary, and the City Council wishes to adopt the amendments recommended by the Personnel Commission therein, NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Huntington Beach does hereby resolve as follows: The City Classification Plan is hereby amended by adding the classification reflected herein below: New Classification Public Information Specialist All other provisions of the Classification Plan shall remain the same. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This classification is primarily responsible for press relations, journalistic writing and photo journalism. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES Provide verbal and written information to the media on a variety of topics involving City policy and procedures. Compose and provide press releases to the media involving City projects, policies and items of community interest. Act as primary liaison between the media and the City Council, City Administrator and City departments. Make written contributions to a variety of Community newsletters. Publish, edit and write for employee newsletter. Handle verbal and written inquiries on City matters of interest from the media, citizens, and other public and private groups. Prepare, write and edit materials for publication. Act as official photographer for City events. Provide support for video production unit in the areas of script writing, editing and format design. The preceding duties have been provided as examples of the essential types of work performed by positions in this job classification. Management reserves the right to make assignments as needed. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE Knowledge of: Principles and practices related to journalism and journalistic photography; principles and practices involving media relations involving municipal government; correct use of journalistic composition, grammar and writing styles; ethical principles and practices related to the field of journalism. ABILITY Ability to: Compose clear, concise and grammatically correct press releases; effectively interface with a variety of press and electronic media representatives; write, edit and publish an employee newsletter; contribute clear, concise articles on areas of interest 0006515.01 12/12/94 4:18 PM on behalf of the City in a variety of community publications; use cameras and video recording equipment for official City functions and activities. EDUCATION Formal education equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Literature or related field, with course work in Journalism and public relations. EXPERIENCE Two years in the field of journalism either on behalf of a public or private agency or as a representative of the media. Experience in the field of photo journalism and formal photographic knowledge. LICENSESITRAINING Valid California Driver License.
