NOW, THEREFORE, in consideration of the convenants and agreements y, herein contained, being done and performed by the parties hereto, it •4. is hereby agreed as follows: I. By my signature hereunder, as Contractor, I certi__v that I am Aware of the provisions of Section 3700 of the Labor Code which .� require every employer to oe insured against liabilit for workmen's compensation or to undertake self-insurance in accordance with the provisions of that code, and I will comply with such provisions before commencing the performance of the work of this contract. Trenches ' (1) General Pipe trenches shall be sufficiently straight between manholes to permit the pipe to be laid true to line in the approximate center of the trench. Unlesi1 otherwise shown an the plans or specified herein, ' excavations for the construction of pipelines whall be in open trenches. It is not anticipated that any unstable material will be encountered in the trench bottom, but if such material is encountered, it scull be removed to a depth to be determined by the Director of Public Works and replaced with well tamped sand and gravel. Such work will be by Change Order, and will be paid for at the unit price bid for 'Like work. (2) Shoring Where necessary, trenches and other excavations shall be properly sheeted and braced to furnish acceptable working conditions. The bracing shall be so arranged as not to place any stress on portions of the completed work until the general construction '> ' thereof has proceeded far enough to provide ample strength. Any damage to structures occurring through settlements, water or earth pressures, slides, caves, or other causes, dce to failure ny lack of sheeting or bracing, or to improper bracing, or through negligence or fault of the Contractor in 01 any other manner, shall be repaired by the Contractor r at his own expense. (3) Limit of Excavation Except by written permission of the Director of Public Worke, the maximum length of open trench � shall be 600 feet, or the distance necessary to accommodate the &.mount of pipe installed in a single day, whichever is the greater. The distance is the collective length at any location, including open excavation, pipe laying and appurtenances, construc- tion and backfV.1 which has not been temporarily resurfaced to allow traffic to pass over. The maximum working area allowed without the first cou-A-se ' of pavement is 1300 feet. (4 ) Trench Width The distance from the outside of the pipe to ex- cavated bank (which includes the thickness of any aheetl.ng), measured at a point 13 inches above the top of the pipe ("xelusive of any branches) shall be as shown on the plans. 1 - 9 - 07. ..... .. _...,....._ ` �.r.r,..�. ..l ,dM a Where the trench width, measured at a point 12 inches above the top of the pipe, is wider than the maximum set forth on the plane, the trench area around the pipe shall be backfilled with Class :` concrete to form a cradle for the pipe. Specia' care shall be used when pouring the concrete cradle around the pipe so no displacement will occur. In the event of movement, the Contractor shall remove and replace all pipe and cradle affected. Any concrete cradle work as indicated above shall be at the expense of the Contractor. C. Excavation for Structures The sides of excavation for structures other than pipe shall be at a sufficient distance to leave At Least two (2) feet in the clear as measured from the extreme outside of the formwork. It shall include the furnishing of all. labor, materials, tools, equipment and work involved :s.n the installation. and subsequent removal of all shoring, sheeting, br�,r.ing and other details which may be necessary. Shoring and sheeting shall be installed during excavation as necessary to prevent disturbing material that is under, or is to be under, an adjacent structure. Side olope,s that cause disturbance of material under an existing or future structure shall be considered as un- aut:horized excavation and shall be refilled as specified herein. If the bottom of the excavation for a structure is found to consist of unsuitable material, this material shall be removed to such a depth and from such areas as are required by the Director of Public Works and the excavation refilled to Grade with compacted gravel fill. Such work will be considered extra work and will be ordered and paid for by Change Order. Where excavation is inadvertently carried below designatt:u elevations by error of the Contractor, the overdepth excavation in such locations shall be rectified by backfilling with cotapacted gravel till or concrete as directed by the Director of Public Works at the Contractor's expense. No earth backfill will be permitted to correct overdepth excavation beneath structures. The bottom of the excavation for a structure shall consist of undisturbed material graded to conform to the outside limits of the structure as shown on the plane, except where indicated otherwise on the plans or herein. No extra compensation will be made for difficulty of excava- tion due to removal of material. r - „V _. d. Dewatering If groundwater is encountered, the material through which the trench or structure is excavated shall be de -- watered by means of a well point system, or other pumping facilities acceptable to the Director of Public Works, to a minimum depth below subgrade of 18 inches. The trenches and other excavation, shall be kept entirely free of water while sewer pipe or concrete is being placed, and until the concrete or mortar has had its final set, or the pipe joints have been completed. The Contractor shall dispose of the water from the work in a suitable manner without damage to adjacent property. Conveyance of eater shall be such as not to interfere with traffic flow. No water shall be drained into work built or under construction without prior consent of the Director of Public Works. Upon written approval of the Orange County Sanitation District (O.C.S.D.), water may be diupoeed of into a sewer :system at a point designated by the O.C.S.D. Water shall be desanded before disposal in the sewer system. 3. Pipe Bedding Pipe shall be carefully bedded a-, shown in the bedding dettiil on the plans. Particular attention is given to the underside of the pipe and fittings to provide a firm bedding support along the full length of the pipe. The Contractor shall be responsible for accurately shaping tho pipe subgrade to fit the bottom of the pipe for the width shown on the bedding details. Each joint shall be recessed in the bedding material as required by the bedding detail in such a manner as to relieve the bell of the pipe of all load and to ensure continuous bearing along the pipe barrel upon the pipe subgrade. The bedding material "A" shall be compacted by approved methods to a relative compaction of 95%. Backfilling shall be carried on simultaneously on each side of the pipe to assure proper protection of the pipe. Trenches (1) Procedure in Pipe Zone - Bedding "B" Bedding "B" shall be placed in the trench ssimultana- oussly on each sides of the pipe for the full width of the trench and thoroughly compacted to a minimum relative compaction of 90%. nackf illing shall be carried on simultaneously on each side of the pipe to insure proper protection of the pipe. 4 (2) Procedure Above Pipe 7.une The portion of the trench above: the pipe zone to within 12 incites of the roadway subgrade or ground surface, as the case may be, shall be backfilled and compacted by methods specified herein to obtain a minimum relative compaction of 90%. Backfilling :shall b-a done with good sound earth, sand or gravel., and no oil cake bittuniriouss pavMment, concrete rock or other lumpy material. Material of perishable, spongy or otherwise improper nature shall not he used in backfilling and no material greater than 4 .� inches in any dimernion shall be placed within one foot of any pipe, manhole or structure. (.3) Procedure at Street: Zone The. upper 12 inches below the roadway subgrade or ground surfaces, as the case may be, shall be compacted y by approved hand, pneumatic p or mechanical type tampers to obtain a relative compaction of 95%. The material for this backfill shall be of goad sound ear i.-.h so that the specified compaction can be obtained, (4) 1MEartesd Backfill Material �C 1 Whenever the excavated material is'. net suitable for j backfill, the Contractor shall arrange for and furnish suitable impor!:ed backfill material acceptable to the Director of Public Works, which is capable of attaining the required relative compaction and shall dispose: of the excess trench excavation as specified herein. Such work will be considered extra work and will be ordered and paid for by Change Order. Structures No backfill shall be placed against or around concrete: structures until the concrete has been inspected and approved by the Director of Public Works. The backfill around structures shall be made in layers not exceeding eight inches in thickness, each layer: being compacted by moistening and tamping by air or hand tools. d. Compaction (1) unless otherwise directed by the Director. of Public Works, trench and structural backfill shall be compacted in accordance with Suction. 19 of the State Standard Specifications. The compaction testing shai.l be in accordance with California Test Method No. 216 or 231. (2) Backfill shall be placed in horizontal layers not exceeding eight inches in dopth and shall be moistened and thoroughly tamped, rolled, or other- wiba compacted to a minimum relative compaction of 90% to a depth of 1.2 inches below the pavement structural section and 95% from 12" below the pavement structural section to the pavement structural section. (3) The Contractor is here: y made aware of the minimum nesting which will bee performed? at the direction of the Director of Public Works. Trenches will be tested in horizontal increment spacing not to exceed 200 lineal feet and in vertical increment spacings not to exceed two feet cormiencing one foot above the top of the pipe. Scope of Work The work covered by this section includes all of the pipe laying work, structures, and appurtenant items of the project;, and shall be in &acordance with Sections 51, 52, 711 and 90 of the State Standard Specifications. 2. Materials A. General All materials entering into this construction shall be in accordance with the requirements as herein specified. •�13-- i L. 4 1 . ."GOP_ b. The mortar shall be mixed in a suitable Mixer or in a water -tight mixing box. The materials must be thoroughly mixed dry until the mass assumes a uniform color and then sufficient water added to give the mixture a proper consistency. No mortar which has begun to set shall be ugedr and no retempering of mortar will be permitted. (4) All reinforcement used shall be in accordance with Section 52 of the; State Standard Specifications. } c, Vitrified Clap Pipe and Fittings (1) General The Contractor shall furnish, install, and test vitrified clay pipe, fittings and appurtenances of the dimenFAoas and to the lines and grades as shown on the plans and hereia specified. The pipe to be installed at the various locations is identified by nominal diameter of pipe in inches followed by the ahbre _iation V.C.P. The Contractor ,shall not store pipe upon the roadway or parrWay of residential streets for more than ten days or upc+n business streets for more than three days. The: City shall retain money in the amount of ten percent (10%) of the progress payment unless approval of Director for greater percent of such estimated value of the work done, The City ahall retain money in the amount of fifty percent (50%) of the value of the materials so estimated to have been furnished and delivered and unused provided the materials were fabri sated specifically for the project. No payment will be made for standard stock items that have not been incorporated in the work. The City shall monthly pay to the contractor while performing the work, the progress payment balance, after deducting therefrom ail previous payments and all sums to be kept or retained under the provisions of the contract. No estimate or payment shall be required to be made when in the judgement of the Director of Public Works, the work is not proc•eeling in accordance j with the provisions of the contractor when in his judgment the total value of the work done since the last estimate amounts to less than three hundred dollars ($300), Progress payments shall be submitted to the Department of Public Works on the Monday before each City Council, meeting for monthly progress payment or final payment. The project's Negative Declaration No. 76--110 has been granted by the City's Environmental Reviaw Committee and the Planning Com- mission has found the project to he in conformance with the CiL•y's General Plan. The project is estimated to cost $9, 000 and is to be financed from City Sewer funds. It is recommended that the City Council approve the plans and specifications, adopt Negative Declaration No. 76-11.0 and direct the City Clerk to publish the Notice Inviting Sealed Bias.
