Box 190 Huntington Beach, California Attention Mr. Vincent G. Moorhouse, director Gentlemen: PROPOSAL FOR HUNTI NGTON BEACH FIER STUDY in accordance with your recent discussions with Mr. Rodney P. Lundin of our office relative to the proposed inspection and structural analysis of the Huntington Beach pier, we are pleased to present this proposal for engineering services. It is understood that the City of Huntingtw Beach desires to conduct a study in sufficient detail to detarmine the structural adequacy of the Municipal Pier and make recommendo - tions for remedial work if fouled necessary. We propose °o conduct a study in accordance with the following scope of work, which we feel will provide the necessary information for the City to determine the rwxt course of action. 'COPE OF WORK Field inatlon An inspection) party consisting of an engineer and j; lief diver, furnished by Koebig & Korbig, in conjunction with two SCUBA divers and a boat "rotor furnished by the City of Huntington PAwch, will conduct the Investigation o`r the pier structure from a bast also to be furnished by the City of Huntington Beach. The timber piling at the outer and of the pier instolled in 1940 wiil be visually Inspected; the diameter of approximately 1/3 of the piling will be measured .at the raud line; core samples obtained with r Swedish Incre"nt Barer will be o4alned from approximately 10 to 15% of the piling; and a :action to be used in testing will be obtained from a pile no longer usable. ,,.,..-... ._.._._ .... ._...._ _ .. ., _ _ .__.._.._.... i .4 Lim 1 b rr i 1 r City of Huntington Beach August le, 1967 Pbga 2 i i ! At least six of the concrete piles landward of the timber portion of the pier will be cored for laboratory analysis. The superstructure of the outfr portion reconstructed with timber in 1940 will be irves tigated for structural integOty and sour dress of materials. At least six core samples will be taken from the concrete pile cops landward of the timber portion c, Ole plur. r t It is understood that a majoiii portion of the superstructure of this portion of the piar was roploced in 1949 and therefore only e superficial investigotion will be made concurrent with other operations. Laboratory Analysis The timber pile core samples w-'Il be analyzed to determine Creosote penetration and evidence of marine organisnis. In addition;, microscopic examination of the pile interinr will be performed to check soundness. Samples cut from the section of ni!;lig removed ! will be subjecrpv to cornprossio n tests. i The concrete core samples taken will be tested to determine the strength of the concrete. :Structural Analysis A structural analysis will be conducted to determine the land carrying capacity of the piling and its relationship to t1he ability of the superstructure to transfer loads to the Piling. Remed is l Work Rgeommendartions for rwnedla! work will be presented biased upon the findingi of the field investigation and the results of the structural cnalysis. Est Irria to A prilimirwry constriction cost estimate will be pr•,pard In accarydonce with the recarn- mindations prominted for remedial warts.
