Xr(F-'a`T : Alicia Wentworth City MTV aawwmd W: &uew*«a rr: A"Wed irr fit: REQlJE, t FOR CITY COUNC* ACTION October 20, 1911 Honorable Mayor and City Council Charles Thompson, City Administr Paul E. Cook, Director of Public Purchase Pumping Unit for Newland Storrs Drain Pump Stations CC-577 iMrerrwsMrt of ierrlee, l4wessmtrrdsliee. l4esly Fw*Nw2 ftwok Aftnw hw Aoe+Mrm Statement of Issue: The existing pumping units at the Newland Pump Station cannot accommodate the design floras entering the station. Therefore a pumping unit with increased capacity is necessary to provide additional protection from flooding for the residents in the drainage area. Recommended Action: Approve the plans anti Y.ecifications for the purchase of a pumping unit for the Newland Storm Vi-Ain Pump Station and authorize the Csl1 for bids. Analysis: During the winter raf.,s, extremely high water levrls are experienced at the Newland Pump Station. This causes the water to hack up into the streets and flooding to occur in some portions of the drainage area. in order to lower the water levees, additional pumping capacity is needed. The City's Master Plan of Starve Drains indicatas that the existirg pump station is bat deficient. This now pumping unit will replace 15 year old pumping *quipment and will significantly increase the capacity of the station. it iu imperative that the pump, gear drive and engine be ordered at this time because the equipment delivery time is estimated to be nine months. The increased pumping capacity will then be available for n.sxt year's rainy season. Alternatives: 1. Do not purchase the new pumping equipment. Thio would leave portions of the drainage area eiubject to flooding. 2. Postpone the purchase of the pumping equipment to a later date. Because of delivery time, this; will not allow sufficient time to install the the pumping unit prier to next year's rainy season. FunndiH: This is a Council ,approved budgeted project and is estimated to cost $110,000. it is finance-d from City Drainage Natrict 7H and the account number is 825770.
