ENGLE, COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECT SUBJECT: APPROVE APPOINTMENT TO THE ALLIED ART OARD Statement ofissue,Funding Source,Recommended Action,Alternative Action(s),Analysis,Environmental Status,Attachment(s) Statement of Issue: There are currently three vacancies on the Allied Arts Board.. There is one applicant recommended for approval. There is also a need to reappoint two board members to additional terms. Funding Source: NA Recommended Action: Motion to: 1. Approve the appointment of Suzanne Boller to a term expiring June 30, 2013 as recommended by Council liaisons Green and Hansen. 2. Approve the reappointment of Diana Lo Schiavo to a second term expiring June 30, 2013, as recommended by Council liaisons Green and Hansen. 3. Approve the reappointment of Greg Marrero to his first full term to expire June 30, 2013 as recommended by Council liaisons Green and Hansen. Alternative Action(s): Do not approve the appointments and advise staff accordingly. Analysis: According to Huntington Beach Municipal Code 2.101 (H.B.M.C. Section 2.101.030, the Allied Arts Board (AAB) shall be composed of nine members. There are currently three vacancies on the Board that have been unfilled for several years. There is one applicant for a vacant position and two reappointments of members who have completed a partial term and a full term. Filling the vacancy will bring the board to seven members. REQUEST FOR CITY COUNCIL ACTION MEETING DATE: 11/16/2009 DEPARTMENT ID NUMBER: 09-017 The vacancies were posted at City Hall and on the City's website. The proposed candidate was reviewed by the Council liaisons and her qualifications were deemed suitable for the Allied Arts Board. The candidates demonstrate a committed interest in the field of the arts and of local art activities. 1. Suzanne Boller is seeking appointment to her first term on the Board. She is a local resident, business owner and artist with an extensive background in painting and portraiture. She has been active in local non-profit organizations as a community volunteer. She has been educated in the arts and continues to study art through ongoing workshops. 2. Diana LoSchiavo is seeking reappointment to a second term on the Board. She is a local artist, former president of the HB Art League and a painting teacher at the HB Art Center. She has served her first term with commitment and focus and has been a strong contributing Board member. 3. Greg Marrero has completed a partial term and is now seeking reappointment to his first full term of office. Greg has a theater background, has served the Board as an active contributor to the Board's projects and programs and has become a valued participant in Board proceedings. Strategic Plano Goal: Appointing at-large community representatives to the Allied Arts Board would meet the Strategic Plan Goal to Improve External and Internal Communication. Accept the resignation of Jeanette Mueller and approve the appointment of Kara Rudin for a term to expire June 30, 2011 as recommended by Council liaisons Cathy Green and Don Hansen; and 2. Accept the resignation of Bob Daley and approve the appointment of Matthew Rudin for a term to expire June 30, 2011 as recommended by Council liaisons Cathy Green and Don Hansen. Alternative Action(s): Do not approve the appointments of Kara Rudin and Matthew Rudin to the Allied Arts Board and advise staff accordingly. Analysis: According to Huntington Beach Municipal Code (H.B.M.C. Section 2.101.020), the Allied Arts Board shall "consist of nine (9) appointed by the City Council by a majority vote. The term of office shall be four years." The candidates being recommended as part of this Request for Council Action will fill the terms of Jeanette Mueller and Bob Daley due to their resignations in June and August of 2008 and will bring the total membership of the board to six. Three additional seats remain open at this time. REQUEST FOR CITY COUNCIL ACTION MEETING ®ATE: 4/6/2009 DEPARTMENT I® NUMBER: CS09-002 The vacancies were posted at City Hall, Huntington Central Library, and the City's web-site. The proposed candidates were reviewed by the Council liaisons and their qualifications were deemed suitable. The candidates demonstrate a committed interest in the field of arts and culture. 1. Kara Rudin is seeking her first appointment. She has been a resident of Huntington Beach for the last year and is an estate attorney with an undergraduate degree in film studies. She is interested in community outreach, arts and cultural affairs and policy development. 2. Matthew Rudin is also seeking his first appointment. He has been a resident of Huntington Beach for the past year and is seeking involvement in the community. Mr. Rudin holds a B.A. in Psychology and is trained in music and graphic arts. He currently works as a graphic designer. He is interested in community service and the development of the arts. Strategic Plan Goal: Appointing at-large community representatives to the Allied Arts Board would meet Strategic Plan Goal E-1, increase community involvement, dialogue, and outreach by educating residents about opportunities for involvement, assuring that the community is well represented on this Council-approved board. I am relocating to the city of Ventura to be closer to my daughter in Santa Barbara. I have enjoyed being on the Board and working with all the members of the Board.
