Financial Impact: Not applicable. Recommended Action: Motion to: A) Approve the reappointment of the following students to a one-year term on the Huntington Beach Youth Board with terms to expire June 2013 as recommended by Council liaisons Devin Dwyer and Matthew Harper: Lindsey Thomas Edison High School Representative Samantha Sharkoff Huntington Beach High School Rep Quentin Cronk Marina High School Representative Gregory Welker At -large Representative B) Approve the appointment of the following students to a one-year term on the Huntington Beach Youth Board with terms to expire June 2013 as recommended by Council liaisons Devin Dwyer and Matthew Harper: Lily Falzon Emily Le Elliot Lee Austin Smith Monica Waldau Alternative Action(s): Ocean View High School Representative At -large Representative At -large Representative At -large Representative At -large Representative Do not approve recommended appointments and direct staff accordingly. HB -11- Item I . - I REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION MEETING DATE: 7/16/2012 DEPARTMENT ID NUMBER: AD 12-012 Analysis: Five Youth Board members have graduated creating vacancies on the 2012-2013 board. Recruitment at each high school has resulted in several applications. The Council Liaisons recommend appointment of four returning members and five new members to the board. Lindsey Thomas, Samantha Sharkoff, Quentin Cronk, and Gregory Welker have requested reappointment for another year. All were instrumental in fundraising and event coordination efforts for Youth in Government Day 2012. Lindsey Thomas was an at -large member, requesting to be appointed as the Edison High School representative for the 2012/13 board. Samantha Sharkoff was an at -large member, requesting to be appointed as the Huntington Beach High School representative for the 2012/13 board. Quentin Cronk was an at -large member, requesting to be appointed as the Marina High School representative for the 2012/13 board. Gregory Welker served as an at -large member and is seeking reappointment to return to the 2012/13 board. The five new members include: • Lily Falzon, a junior at Ocean View High School who serves as secretary of her class and enjoys tennis, piano and Girl Scouts, hopes to contribute ideas to improve Huntington Beach. ■ Emily Le is a junior at Edison High School involved in various community service organizations eager to represent the youth of the city. ■ Elliot Lee is a junior at Ocean View High School who enjoys MUN, golf and Junior Statesmen of America. He is interested in local government and serving the community. ■ Austin Smith, a sophomore at Edison High School highly involved in sports, debate team, and various academic organizations. Austin looks forward to providing input and encouraging youth to become more interested in local government. • Monica Waldau is a senior at Marina High School who serves as captain if her dance team. Monica looks forward to becoming involved with the city. This board meets on the second Monday of each month in the 5th floor conference room at 3:30 pm. Board consists of nine (9) members (4 high schools and 5 at -large). All members serve for one term beginning July through June of each year. A revised roster of the 2012/13 Youth Board is included as Attachment 1. Environmental Status: Not applicable.
