Wilson, City Manager PREPARED BY: Janeen Laudenback, Interim Director of Community Services SUBJECT: Approve Youth Board appointments and reappointments with terms to expire in June 2014 Statement of Issue: With high school graduations, four vacancies exist on the Huntington Beach Youth Board, and five members are seeking reappointment. Financial Impact: Not applicable Recommended Action: A) As recommended by City Council liaisons Joe Shaw and Jill Hardy, approve the reappointment of the following students to a one-year term on the Huntington Beach Youth Board with terms to expire June 2014: Austin Smith — Edison High School Representative Emily Lee — Edison High School At -Large Representative Samantha Sharkoff — Huntington Beach High School Representative Lily Falzon — Ocean View High School Representative Elliot Lee — Ocean View High School At -Large Representative B) As recommended by Council liaisons Joe Shaw and Jill Hardy, approve the appointment of the following students to a one-year term on the Huntington Beach Youth Board with terms to expire June 2014: Madison Feldman — Edison High School At -large Representative Aurora Johnson — Huntington Beach High School At -large Representative Dylan Kato — Marina High School Representative Melissa Applebee — Marina High School At -Large Representative Alternative Action(s): Do not approve the recommendations; request further review by liaisons. Analysis: Four Youth Board members have graduated creating vacancies on the 2013/2014 board. Recruitments at each of the high school resulted in several applications. Austin Smith, Emily Lee, Samantha Sharkoff, Lily Falzon, and Eliott Lee have requested reappointment for another year. All were instrumental in fundraising and event coordination for Youth in Government Day 2013 event. HB -37- Item 3. - 1 Dept. ID CS 13-011 Page 2 of 2 Meeting Date: 7/1/2013 Austin Smith was an at -large member, requesting to be appointed as the Edison High School Representative. Samantha Sharkoff served as the Huntington Beach High School Representative, Lily Falzon served as the Ocean View High School Representative, Emily Lee served as the Edison High School At -Large Representative, and E I I i of Lee served as the Ocean View High School At -Large Representative and all are seeking reappointment to return to the 2013/2014 board. After interviewing potential candidates, four new members were selected: Aurora Johnson, a r i s i n g sophomore at Huntington Beach High School who served on the Children's Needs Task Force and the Human Relations Task Force and has demonstrated her desire to contribute ideas to improve Huntington Beach; Melissa Applebee, a junior at Marina High School who served as president of her Freshman and Sophomore classes and has been elected as President her Junior year and who will encourage Huntington Beach youth to become more interested in local government; Dylan Kato, a senior at Marina High School who served three years on the ASB board and who will give back to his school by helping with youth events; and Madison Feldman, a junior at Edison High School who participates in a variety of academic organizations and looks forward to broadening her understanding of local government and providing input to the city. This board meets on the second Monday of each month in the fifth floor conference room at 3:30 p.m. The board consists of nine members (four high school representatives, and five high school at -large representatives). All members serve for a one-year term beginning July 1 through May 31 of the following year.
