Analysis:
Per the Huntington Beach Municipal Code 2.101 (H.B.M.C. Section 2.1.01.030), the Allied Arts
Board (AAB) shall be composed of nine members. There are currently five vacancies on the AAB.
Two of the five vacancies are due to the unscheduled resignations of Suzanne Boller and Elise
Hartman. The third vacancy is due to the term expiration of Diana Lo Schiavo. All three of these
positions had terms ending on June 30, 2013. The remaining two positions are requests for
reappointments to second terms. With these appointments there is still one remaining vacancy on
the AAB.
The vacancies were posted according to the Maddy Act at City Hall and on the City's website. The
proposed candidates were reviewed and recommended by the Council Liaisons. At the September
19, 2011 meeting, City Council approved a change to the Municipal Code to establish that at least
one of the nine members of the Allied Arts Board be a member of the Huntington Beach Art Center
Foundation. As described below; one candidate for reappointment currently fulfills this requirement.
In addition to the three new appointments, the reappointments of two current AAB members to
second terms allows for consistency and continuity on the board. All five candidates demonstrate a
committed interest in the field of the arts and of local art activities.
