Wilson, City Manager PREPARED BY: Ken Domer, Assistant City Manager SUBJECT: Approve the appointments of Tony Soriano and Jessica Bechtold to the Environmental Board as recommended by City Council Liaisons, Mayor Pro Tern Shaw and Councilmembers Hardy and Boardman Statement of Issue: There are currently two vacant positions on the Environmental Board. After review of submitted applications, Tony Soriano and Jessica Bechtold are being transmitted for consideration for appointment to the Environmental Board. Financial Impact: Not applicable Recommended Action: Approve the appointments to the Environmental Board. Tony Soriano for a first term to expire June 30, 2015, and Jessica Bechtold for a first term to expire June 30, 2014 as recommended by City Council Liaisons Mayor Pro Tern Shaw and Councilmembers Hardy and Boardman. Alternative Action(s): Do not approve the appointment and direct staff how to proceed. Analysis: Two vacancies on the Environmental Board currently exist. Those two positions were formerly held by Bob Smith and Michael Marshall. The vacancies were posted according to the Maddy Act at City Hall and on the City's website. Staff reviewed all of the applications with City Councilmember liaisons Shaw, Hardy and Boardman and their selections are reflected in this item. I am also a member of Alpha Phi International Fraternity where I serve as Vice President of Membership and Chapter Journalist on the Executive Board of the Long Beach Alumnae Chapter. I work closely with our programs geared towards philanthropy, including projects for Millers' Children's Hospital. I think the key to some of this are sustainable practices and education, two things I live by daily as both a teacher and active volunteer. I am an incredibly motivated person who does everything with passion and sincerity. As an educator, I have to be organized, energetic, and informed about a wide -range of topics. My extensive background in education and community outreach would serve both the Environmental Board and the community well as these are skills that can contribute to a variety of projects and give voice to the cit-tens of Huntington Beach. I have always been active in my immediate community, whether on my college campus, as a teacher and the various committees I contribute to, or at my residence where I serve as the HOA President. At this point in my life, I would like to become more active in the wider community and be of service to Huntington Beach. I think it is incredibly important to think of longevity and the future when considering our community, and I would like to be a part of those solutions.
