Wilson, City Manager PREPARED BY: Janeen Laudenback, Director of Community Services SUBJECT: Approve appointments to the Human Relations Task Force (HRTF) as recommended by City Council Liaisons Mayor Katapodis and Councilmember Hardv Statement of Issue: There is a need to fill three vacancies on the City's Human Relations Task Force due to unscheduled resignations. Financial Impact: Not applicable Recommended Action: A) Accept the resignation of Lenore McKinnon and approve the appointment of Shideh Balali Farjoodi for a term to expire December 31, 2017, as recommended by City Council liaisons Mayor Katapodis and Councilmember Hardy; and, B) Accept the resignations of Lindsley Lowell Monfort and Minzah Malik and approve the appointments of Michael Waldinger and Youngsun Park for terms to expire December 31, 2019, as recommended by City Council liaisons Mayor Katapodis and Councilmember Hardy. Alternative Action(s): Do not approve recommended appointments to the Human Relations Task Force and direct staff accordingly. Analysis: The Human Relations Task Force (HRTF) was formed in April 1997 with a mission to "promote and celebrate diversity in our community through education and understanding." Currently the HRTF has one vacancy due to unscheduled resignations. Press releases were sent out to advertise the vacancies, as well as notices on the City's website, Channel 3, social media, and the posting boards at City Hall and the Central Library. As a result of this process and interviews held by the City Council liaisons, the following individuals are being recommended for appointment: Shideh Balali Farjoodi — Ms. Farjoodi has been a resident of Huntington Beach for over two (2) years. She is an attorney with an office in Newport Beach. She has extensive volunteer experience working in diversity programs at both Cleveland Humanities High School in Reseda, California, as well as in the Cross Cultural Center at the University of Davis where she worked in Dept. Ms. Farjoodi stated that she "loves working with people" and that she hopes to bring her life experiences, especially in the area of cultural diversity, to the Task Force. Michael Waldinger — Mr. Waldinger has been a resident for over 12 years. He is a special education teacher and has worked with individuals with disabilities for over 20 years. Mr. Waldinger's civic interests include human rights issues. Mr. Waldinger stated that he "wants Huntington Beach to be known for its acceptance and hospitality toward all, as this is a beautiful place to live, and travel destination for our visitors." Youngsun Park — Ms. Park has lived in the city over six (6) years. She is an attorney and has volunteered for a number of organizations, most recently as President of the Orange County Korean American Bar Association. Her civic interests include diversity, seniors, youth, and general community issues. Ms. Park stated that diversity "has been an issue close to my heart as a working professional and as a mother of a nine year old girl, and getting involved in her local community was very important."
